Common Winter Weather Car Maintenance Mistakes

1132290_17725639Even drivers who take precautions through proper maintenance can make damage-incurring mistakes. While safe driving practices and regular maintenance are the most reliable ways to protect your vehicle, the only way to foolproof your vehicle this winter is to exercise a little common sense.

Mistake #1. Letting your car run idle to heat up in the morning.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not a good idea. Letting your car run idle to raise the temperature is the most inefficient method to heat your car. It also wastes gas, and it can overwhelm your car’s catalytic converter, which needs high exhaust temperatures to work properly. If you consistently leave your engine idling in cold temperatures for long periods of time, your converter can become “plugged” which will lead to poor gas mileage and dirtier exhaust.

Also, unless you have a garage, leaving your engine running as a way to heat your car generally means that you will be leaving your car unattended. This is not a good idea for the obvious reason that if someone wants to steal your car, the thief will have easy access and a warm ride to the nearest chop shop.

Mistake #2. Leaving your car parked with a low tank of gas.

During cold winter weather, the air inside your gas tank can become moist, which can crystallize and freeze. Keeping a full tank of gas means less air and less chance of frozen fuel lines. If it’s inconvenient to keep your tank full, keep a fuel deicer on hand to add to the gas tank. Either way, it’s best to be prepared. You don’t want to be late for work because you’re waiting for your fuel lines to thaw.

Mistake #3. Using hot water to remedy icy windshields.

Many novice car owners have walked outside during the coldest days of winter only to be perplexed by a sheet of ice that has enshrouded a vehicle. But don’t reach for the kettle because pouring hot or boiling water over an iced windshield can actually cause your windshield to break. This is because the rapid change in temperature for the glass — from freezing cold to scalding hot — causes the glass to expand and contract too quickly, leading to fractures. Instead, use an ice scraper. If you find yourself unprepared, grab a CD, a CD case, a spatula, or a credit card to scrape away that ice.

Mistake #4. Neglecting your tire pressure.

Colder weather means compressed air, which means lower tire pressure. Relying on emergency lights or visibly low tires as clues to keep your tire pressure in check can be dangerous, especially for those who commute long distances to work. Tire pressure must be monitored throughout the winter, as every 10 degree drop in temperature reduces the pressure in your tires by one pound per square-inch (PSI). Keep a pressure gauge and a portable air pump in the trunk to administer on-the-spot tire pressure maintenance.

Vauxhall comes out on top for the 11th year running

Vauxhall has managed to produce the most commercial vehicles in the UK for the eleventh year running – beating its closest rivals by a significant number of units. The manufacturer managed to turn out an impressive 53,465 Vivaro-type vans from its Luton plant last year, while 5,373 Astravans rolled off its Ellesmere Port production line.

Hoping to cash in on some of the popularity, Renault is now producing its own version of the popular Vivaro, the Trafic, from its partner Nissan’s Barcelona plant this year. They should be available to buy in the UK later in 2013. Vauxhall UK Chairman and MD, Duncan Aldred said;

‘We are very proud of our manufacturing bases here in the UK, especially as we enter out 11oth year. Vauxhall has been building ans selling vehicles in Britain without interruption since 1903.’

Car insurance claim with LV takes a tortuous route

My mechanic crashed my car I am still waiting for his insurance company to settle the claim

A mechanic from my local garage was driving my car to his premises when he skidded on ice and collided with another vehicle. There was considerable damage to both cars and the mechanic reported the incident to his insurers, LV. He was, in fact, put through to accident management company ClaimCare.

ClaimCare appointed another firm, The Car Repair Network, who told my mechanic to take my car to an appointed garage for inspection. The garage owner had received only vague details about the claim from the insurer so I called LV and discovered that, although it had a record of the incident, it had few details and no idea of who I was.

How to save an extra £50 a month

What would it take to make you happy? For some of us, it could be as simple as saving £1.66 per day.

£1.66… it doesn’t sound like a particularly earth-shattering sum, does it? In fact, it’s the kind of loose change you often find rattling around at the bottom or your bag or collecting dust on the mantelpiece.

However, some 9 million Brits would feel happier with their lot if they were able to put aside this amount every day, which would equate to £50 over the course of a month.

This is according to research from government savings arm NS&I, which also found that 62% of Brits are dissatisfied with the amount of savings they have.

With this in mind, we’ve rounded up some tips that could potentially help you save. You’re probably not going to attempt them all, but taking up just one or two could help you hit that £50 target.

Save on showers

Following a recent spate of price hikes, the topic of energy bills is a huge source of concern for households across the UK. Luckily, there are numerous ways you could slash your energy bill with minimal effort.

You could, for instance, replace your traditional showerhead with a water-efficient model. According to the Energy Saving Trust, this could save the average family of four around £72 a year on water heating and another £78 on water bills.

Once you factor in the £27 cost of the showerhead, that’s an annual saving of £123 or just over £10 per month. While it doesn’t exactly meet the £50 target, it’s a decent start.

Remember this tip only applies if your shower currently takes water directly from your boiler or hot water tank.

POTENTIAL MONTHLY SAVING: Around £10 or higher if you also try other tips.

Stop wasting food

According to research from the Waste and Resources Action Programme, the average family with children wastes 680 a year on food. Doing the maths, that’s almost £57 per month.

Check out Stop wasting £680 a year on food for tips on how you could save.

POTENTIAL MONTHLY SAVING: Almost £57

Cut the interest on your debt repayments

If you’re currently paying expensive interest on your credit card, you might able to save money with a 0% balance transfer card as these products won’t charge any interest during an introductory period.

Imagine you have a debt of £2,500 and are paying interest at a rate of 20%, you would be paying £38 in interest alone this month.

With a balance transfer card, you could avoid these interest payments during the 0% period and focus on paying down your debt.

Just one word of caution – most lenders charge a one-off fee if you would like to transfer a balance onto a card and it’s wise to take this in account.

POTENTIAL MONTHLY SAVING: Depends on your level of debt

Ditch the vending machine

By now, you’re probably sick of being told how much money you could save by taking a packed lunch into work every day, but have you considered how much you spend on snacks?

Say you buy two cans of cokes and a bar of chocolate from the vending machine every day, you could easily be spending £1.66. Ditch this habit and you could potentially save £50 a month.

POTENTIAL MONTHLY SAVING: £50

We can’t promise eternal happiness, if you follow our money-saving tips. However, you might be able to put a little extra into your savings each month and perhaps feel a little less financially frustrated.

The Hartford/MIT Determine Which Driver Aids Are Best for Older Drivers

While today's cars can come equipped with a number of driving aids ranging from "simple" sonar sensors to help judge distances from obstacles, to those that actually park your car for you, for the most part, few have been able to put a quantifiable amount to how well they work. On top of that, most of the features have only been equipped on high-end luxury cars until the past couple of years. To compound the issue, this put many high-tech features out of reach for younger buyers, only allowing mostly older drivers to afford them.

Now, enter The Hartford and the MIT AgeLab. The financial services giant, partnering with the MIT group specifically charged with conducting research to improve the quality of life for older adults, were able to determine that drivers over the age of 50 are more likely than any other age group to buy vehicles containing those modern technologies. With that figure in mind, the two conducted a study into what technologies help advance these type of driver's abilities the most. When the results were compiled, the two listed their top 10 most effective features, which goes as follows:

  1. Smart Headlights
Researchers found that headlights capable of adjusting the range and intensity of the headlamps not only reduce glare and improve night vision, but also spread light where normal headlamps can't when making turns.
  2. Emergency Response Systems
Systems including and similar to GM's OnStar offer quick assistance to drivers at the push of a button. This allows a quick response in the event of a medical emergency, or if a driver simply needs directions. In addition, these systems can also alert operators in the event of a collision, which can save precious seconds when it comes to getting first responders to the scene.
  3. Reverse Monitoring Systems
By using rear-view cameras and sonar sensors, these aids not only provide a wide angle view of what is behind the driver's car, but can also help drivers judge distances from obstacles and back up safely. Plus, the ability to see objects behind the vehicle through a monitor in the dashboard lets drivers face forward, providing a huge safety advantage for those with reduced flexibility.
  4. Blind Spot Warning Systems
This helpful system warns drivers of objects lingering in blind spots, and can also be a helpful tool for those with a limited range of motion. Drivers receive an audible and visual alert should they be at risk of a potential collision while changing lanes or parking.
  5. Lane Departure Warning
These systems take blind spot warning a step further by monitoring the vehicle's position on the road, not only providing a warning if the driver drifts out of their intended lane, but by also adjusting the vehicle's direction slightly to help keep the car where it belongs.
  6. Vehicle Stability Control
Relying on multiple sensors that detect engine speed, throttle position, wheel speed, braking force, and vehicle yaw, these systems help automatically bring your vehicle back into its intended line of travel. They are particularly effective in situations where the driver underestimates the angle of a curve or experiences a momentary loss of control during poor weather.
  7. Assistive Parking Systems
While this technology seemed next to impossible a few years ago, a number of vehicles today come equipped with systems that allow a car to park entirely by itself. This not only increases the number of places an elderly driver can park, but can also reduce driver stress as well.
  8. Voice Activated Systems
These helpful systems allow drivers to access and control just about any feature available through the car's infotainment system. Depending on the car, this can include air conditioning, phone calls, music selections, and stereo volume. This allows drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road where they belong.
  9. Crash Mitigation Systems
Also referred to as collision avoidance systems, these aids can detect when the vehicle is in danger of collision. If the system detects an impending collision, it can help minimize the impact by applying the brakes at maximum force – usually before the driver has time to react. By slowing the car, it can help reduce the likelihood of injury in a crash.
  10. Drowsy Driver AlertsThese systems monitor the degree to which a driver may or may not be paying attention. If the system detects the driver isn't at attention, it will provide feedback drivers can hear, and sometimes feel, to help them stay alert while on the road.

Six things to do before Christmas

Now that December almost here, we reveal six ways to safeguard your finances before Santa arrives.

With presents to open and trees to decorate, Christmas can be the perfect time of year to indulge our inner child.

However, this doesn’t mean we can forget about our financial responsibilities. If we’re not vigilant, Christmas can end up being one of the most painful times for our wallets, so we’ve drawn up a six-point Christmas financial checklist.

1. Check your presents are insured

Some insurance companies automatically increase the value of your home contents cover around Christmas. The Post Office, for instance, raises contents cover by 10%, but other insurers will not so it makes sense to check your policy’s fine print.

Most insurance policies carry a single article limit (SAL) which is the maximum you can claim for an individual item. Beware, the limit could be just a few hundred pounds.

If your presents exceed the SAL, contact your insurance company as you may need to name them separately on your policy or even purchase separate cover.

2. Sort out your tax return

If you need to send a self-assessment tax return, the online deadline is 31 January.

However, it’s wise to get this sorted as soon as possible rather than getting caught up in a last-minute scramble. If you fail to meet the deadline, you could face a £100 fine.

People who need to fill in an online form include the self employed, those who need to pay Capital Gains Tax and anyone whose income is above a certain level. However, this list isn’t extensive so check the HM Revenue & Customs website for more details.

3. Get your boiler serviced

If your boiler has ever given out during winter, you probably know how stressful the experience can be.

However, it can also work out extremely expensive if you don’t have some form of home emergency cover included on your home insurance.

Rather than risk your boiler dying on a freezing winter night, it might be easier and cheaper to have it serviced by a registered gas engineer over the next few weeks.

4. Cut the cost of your energy bills

As you probably remember from the past couple of winters, our gas and electricity bills have been getting more and more expensive.

The situation is bound to get worse this year. During the past six months, five of the Big Six energy suppliers has raised prices. As a result, the typical household now faces energy bills of £1,283 a year, according to research from Skipton Finance Services.

However, you may be able to offset these hikes by changing to a new energy supplier. In some cases, it’s possible to save several hundred pounds.

5. Prepare your car for winter

Every couple of years, antifreeze and engine coolant levels deteriorate, which leaves your engine at risk of freezing. Antifreeze is necessary to prevent the engine from overheating or freezing during the winter months.

Before the temperature drops even further, it might be a good idea to top up your anti-freeze and perform a check on your car. In all likelihood, this will be much cheaper than repairing serious engine damage further down the line.

6. Set your financial goals for 2013

Whether you want to clear existing credit card debt, get on the property ladder or start saving, it’s a good idea to set your financial priorities as early as possible.

Once you’ve got a clear idea of your goals for next year, you can relax and enjoy the festive season.

Falling demand for commercial vehicles

Across the EU, demand for commercial vehicles has dropped almost 12% over the past year. This includes sales of CVs which have also dropped off significantly since the beginning of 2011.

We’re not sure what this means for commercial vehicles, but we’re sure it has a whole lot to do with the current financial climate. Let’s hope things pick up in the commercial market and that the introduction of further electric vehicles takes off. With the Olympic Games this summer, trade and business will be busier than ever- just the boost we all need!

Why Some Drivers Would Not Need Comprehensive Coverage

Clean Diesel Sales Continue to Climb in U.S.

According to Autoblog.com, sales of environmentally friendly diesel vehicles, or clean diesels, are up by 27.5%, compared to sales numbers at the same point last year. The article cited a recent study by HybridCars.com and the automotive research and analysis company Baum and Associates. The study revealed that Americans have purchased 61,214 clean diesel-powered vehicles during the first six months of the year. Perhaps even more surprising is the fact that this figure does not include the sale of heavy-duty diesel pickup trucks. But while the sales numbers are significant, they still do not match the number of hybrids being sold in the U.S. According to the study, hybrid sales are up by 63.5% over 2011’s numbers, and beyond the sale of green vehicles, overall automobile sales increased by 14.9% as well.

For clean diesels, 2012 year marks the second straight year where sales have increased by double-digits. According to Allen Schaeffer, the executive director of the Diesel Technol…

How you're putting your home at risk

From blocked guttering to an unswept chimney, we reveal the surprising ways you could invalidate your home insurance this winter.

Convinced you hate winter? Well, these months can be even more gruelling for our properties as they’re constantly assaulted by rain, snow and wind. In fact, any number of mishaps could cause tens of thousands of pounds in damage – a collapsed roof, a burst pipe, etc, etc…

Unfortunately your home insurer may not pay out if it believes you have been negligent with the maintenance of your property.

New data from insurance company AXA reveals that the company rejects around five percent of storm damage claims if the damage has been caused by poor maintenance, rather than extreme weather.

Despite this, some 59% of homeowners incorrectly believe their insurer will cover all weather-related damage.

‘Misconceptions about home insurance cover is an industry-wide problem that causes a lot of heartache for consumers,’ said James Barclay, home insurance underwriting manager at AXA.

‘There are some claims that we simply have to turn away as they are caused by obvious neglect and lack of investment in the property rather than the weather,’ he added.

How we’re neglecting our homes

Although most of us have probably postponed work around the house at one time or another, an alarming number of Brits fail to perform essential maintenance.

One in 10 of those surveyed was aware of a leaky roof, 15% have cracks in the walls and 10% have blocked or damaged drains.

While these issues may seem relatively minor, they could be a major factor contributing to severe storm damage.

Some 36% of those quizzed said they had not repaired the damage due to concerns over cost. Perhaps more shockingly, 3% confessed they were waiting for the problem to escalate before putting in an insurance claim.

Furthermore, an insurer may deem you have been negligent if an unswept chimney has caused a fire or untended crawling plants damage your brickwork. Bear in mind, these are issues that could occur at any time of year, not only in winter.

What if I take care of my home?

While homeowners who neglect their properties could be left with a hefty bill in the event of an unpaid insurance claim, this situation is more reassuring for those who keep their properties in good repair.

Most insurers should pay out for weather damage as part of a standard perils policy. One possible exception being if you live in an area with a high risk of flooding and your insurer specifically excludes flood-related damage in your policy.

Your insurance company will normally send a loss adjuster to visit the property who will subsequently appoint a contractor to oversee the repairs. A number of policies will also provide alternative accommodation should your home become uninhabitable.

Bear in mind, getting your home repaired may take longer during a city-wide incident when insurers and contractors are over-stretched.

Everything You Need to Know About Excluding People From Auto Insurance

Extremely toxic drivers, such as those convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, may make an exclusion a necessity.

As one’s household grows, so too, does their auto insurance policy. While this is a pretty standard and expected occurrence, it’s important for people with an increasing number of licensed drivers under one roof to realize they have options. Should any of their family members threaten their driving reputation and quotes, policyholders have the option to remove and exclude them from their insurance plans, making auto coverage someone else’s problem and responsibility.

Requesting an Exclusion

If you’re a policyholder interested in excluding one or more individuals from your policy, then you need to contact your insurance company and/or agent. Your request will have to be in writing and might also come with additional forms and paperwork, depending on who your insurance company is. It’s also important to note that requesting an exclusion may cause your rates to increase a bit, but some view this cost as a much more affordable expense than the potential damages they might be held accountable for when the dangerous driver(s) in question get in a serious accident or have repeated traffic offenses.

Whom Should I Exclude?

Now that you know how to request an exclusion, it’s important to understand WHO to exclude. You should exclude anyone you see as high-risk, unreliable and irresponsible. Individuals who show no regard for rules and regulations and could care less what happens to your name and record in the process are other obvious options. To help make the choice easier for you, below is a list of three individuals you definitely don’t want on your policy.

Mittens, the Family Cat

While a fluffy, cute member of the family, Mittens also has a wild side with which you are all too familiar. She is open about her late-night romps with her neighborhood friends, often coming home as the sun rises. She’s practically nocturnal! Those crazy hours coupled with her sassy attitude are a recipe for disaster for you and your record, so nip this problem in the bud while you still can — before Mittens brings you down with her.

Your Six-year-old Who’s Going on Sixteen

Six-year-old Ben is your pride and joy. He’s cute and sweet, but let’s be honest — the boy is growing up too fast. Rather than run the risk of him growing up, stealing your car and running away, it’s probably best to exclude him from your policy to keep that from happening. You might not be able to stop him from physically growing, but you will darn sure try to stop him from leaving you!

The Neighbor Next Door Who Thinks He’s ALWAYS Welcome

Sure you let him borrow a cup a sugar once, but does that really warrant unannounced pop-ins or the dreaded ‘surprise I was waiting for you to get home from work’ visit? The answer is obviously no, but that doesn’t stop your too-close-for-comfort neighbor from doing just that and more. A sweet, eager individual with no concept of social norms, this neighbor is here so often you’re worried he thinks he’s actually a part of the family. While you technically shouldn’t have to cover him on your insurance, the lines that surround your whole relationship — and evidently your property— have been blurred. So, just to be on the safe side, you better exclude him. Who knows, maybe one day he’ll get really comfortable and decide to take your car for a spin and get locked up for grand theft auto — maybe then at least you’ll get to cook in peace again!

Reality Check

Obviously, these examples of potential exclusions are extreme and ridiculous, but that’s just the point. Auto insurance exclusions are a serious issue that should be treated as such. They shouldn’t be added to policies willy-nilly and on a whim, but rather after serious thought and consideration has been given to the situation. It can be a pricey and potentially lengthy process that should only be implemented after you have determined there is no other feasible option.

You should only opt to exclude drivers with repeated violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding or any other behavior that shows a disregard for the law. It’s also important to note that exclusions can also apply to non-related roommates. Depending on your policy and location, it might be a smart idea to exclude any irresponsible roommates you might have, should they try to drive your vehicle without permission and thus endanger your reputation and record.

We do hope you’re never presented with having to exclude a family member from your auto policy. Keep in mind, it’s only advisable when the said-driver is extremely toxic. Most of the time, excluding a single driver will only lead to higher rates for everyone involved.

You’ll know they are a real risk if they cause you to be subjected to higher rates, or worse, put you in danger of losing your coverage altogether — those are costly expenses worth the fees that come along with an exclusion.

If you are seriously considering opting for an exclusion, talk with your insurer to explore all of your options and alternatives. They should help point you in the right direction for your future.
