Study Shows Teens “Inherit” Poor Driving Habits From Parents

According to a new study from Liberty Mutual Insurance and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), teens that engage in dangerous driving are not picking up poor habits on their own, but instead have observed their parents engage in them while riding as passengers. Out of more than 1,700 teens surveyed across the country, the vast majority pointed out a number of poor and dangerous driving habits exhibited by their parents.

The survey's results revealed that 91% of teens observed their parents talking on cell phones while driving, 88% observed their parents speeding, and 59% of parents were guilty of texting while driving. And beyond speeding and hot-topic driving hazards like cell phone use, almost half of the teens surveyed reported that they had witnessed their parents drive at least occasionally without a seatbelt. Even more disturbing was that 20% teens said they have observed their parents driving while under the influence of alcohol, while 7% have observed their parents drive under the influence of marijuana. The findings were disturbing, as teens practically mirrored their parents behavior in most categories.

Among the same 1,700 teens surveyed, 90% admitted to talking on their cell phones while driving, 94% admitted to speeding occasionally (while 47% said they speed often to very often), and nearly 80% admitted to sending text messages while driving. When it came to seatbelt use, 33% confessed that they have driven without a seatbelt. As far as driving under the influence, 15% of teens surveyed had driven under the influence of alcohol, while 16% had driven after using marijuana. For Liberty Mutual and SADD, the results provide a clear link between observed and self-reported driving behaviors.

Beyond a number of poor driving influences that teens admitted to witnessing from parents, 66% of teen drivers said that they are often instructed to "do as I say, not as I do" by their own parents when it comes to driving habits. According to Stephen Wallace, a senior advisor for policy research and education at SADD, this type of instruction from parents actually undermines the rules of the road they set for their teens. Wallace believes that the best instruction that a teen can receive when it comes to driving safely is for parents to set the example and become a good role model behind the wheel. Additionally, Wallace advises that parents should create an open dialogue about safe driving behavior with their teens, and also create and sing a parent/teen contract outlining in detail the types of positive driving habits both parties will adhere to when on the road.

Parent/teen contracts can be found on the Liberty Mutual website, or in most cases, on the website of your personal insurance provider.

How to Live Out of Your Car

Most homeless people will tell you that there are two classes of homelessness: with car and without a car. If you are homeless, but still own a car, you may find yourself relying on it as a temporary shelter until you get back on your feet. Some cities have safe-parking programs that allow a person living in their car to park and sleep in a designated parking lot without fear of being hassled. However, more programs like this are needed if we, as a nation, genuinely wish to help the 3.5 million Americans who, according to the National Coalition of the Homeless, experience homelessness each year. Here are six tips for living out of your car if you are otherwise homeless.

  1. Find a place to park

Finding a place to discreetly park your car so that you can rest is tricky, since the laws regarding parking on private or public property and sleeping in your vehicle vary from state to state. If there is no safe-parking program in your city, church parking lots, 24-hour shopping centers, and neighborhoods where you can park not in front of a home, but in between a residential and business property, are all potentially safe and discreet places for you to park and sleep. Parking consistently in the same spot or neighborhood will draw attention, so try to locate several places where you can park on any given night.

  2. Truck stops, rest stops, and Walmart stores

For the weary traveler, a truck stop, rest stop, or a Pilot Travel Center are all safe, cost-free places to park and sleep. Chain truck and rest stops are well-lit and staffed with 24-hour security, and provide an oasis of amenities for the weary traveler, including showers and laundry facilities. Most, but not all, Walmart stores allow RVs and other vehicles to park overnight in their parking lots. Be sure to check with a store's manager in advance before parking and bedding down for the night.

  3. Using a car cover

Consider using a car cover if you are unable to park at a truck stop or Walmart. A car cover will help you to remain discreet wherever you park and provide you with the privacy you need in order to rest and sleep. However, a car cover may draw the attention of thieves, who will assume that underneath it is an expensive car. And while a car cover is helpful for additional warmth in winter weather, in the summer, it will turn the inside of your car into an oven.

  4. Keep your car clean

After a day or two of sleeping in your car, your car will start to stink. Try just barely cracking the windows before you go to sleep in order to keep the air inside fresh and circulating. Clean the interior and exterior of your car regularly, at a local car wash if you can afford it, just as you would if you were not homeless.

  5. Keep yourself clean

Keeping clean and looking presentable when you're homeless is challenging, but absolutely crucial if you hope to find or maintain a job. Truck and rest stops usually have showers for travelers, but using one will cost you $7 to $10. Public beaches, pools, or community centers are all places where you can grab a quick shower for free. Wet Ones can be a surprisingly refreshing and thorough way to clean yourself up if you don't have access to running water or a shower.

  6. Stay safe

Be smart about where you park your car; avoid sketchy neighborhoods, and try to park near or under a street lamp. While inside your car, make sure all four doors are always locked. If someone tries to break into your car unaware that you are inside asleep, you can almost always scare them off by honking your car horn.

Turn your hobby into a second income

From eating free meals in restaurants to buying alcohol, we reveal six ways you could make extra money in your spare time.

Think of a typical weekend. How do you spend your free time apart from watching TV and having one too many beers?

If you have a particular hobby or interest, you might not realise you could use this activity to supplement your income. We show you how.

1. Web design

Tech wizards could put their expertise to use by designing and building websites for small businesses and start-ups.

As soon as you have a few satisfied customers, you could pick up more business through word of mouth.

You could also try advertising your services through websites such as PeoplePerHour and Freelancer.co.uk.

2. Become a mystery shopper

Many retailers employ mystery shoppers to review the quality of service in their branches – something that will probably come naturally if you hit the shops most weekends.

If you visit restaurants, you could end up with a free meal and having your expenses reimbursed.

If becoming a mystery shopper appeals to you, visit websites such as Market Force and Retail Maxim.

3. Car booting

Do you love to spend a Sunday morning or bank holiday haggling at your local car boot sale?

Then, you could set up your own stall and clear out the kids’ old school uniform or your old university textbooks.

For more information on how to sell your clutter, check out The £2,817 fortune in your attic.

4. DIY

Anyone with a knack for making home improvements or decorating could supplement their earnings by taking on odd jobs.

The amount you can charge will depend on the average rate in your area and how specialised your skills are.

Let’s say, for example, you charge £15 per hour and work five hours a week. You could pick up £75 per week, which would equate to £300 per month.

5. Arts and crafts

If you have a flair for knitting, making jewellery or homemade cards, you could sell your creations at arts and crafts fetes.

If you’d like to increase your customer base, you could consider setting up your own website. Alternatively, websites such as Etsy and Misi allow users to sell arts and crafts.

6. Going to the pub

If you’re a regular in your local watering hole, you could try to pick up a few shifts behind the bar.

You’ll probably still be able to chat to the regulars and they might even buy you a drink or two. Just try not to overdo it – getting drunk on the job is rarely a wise career move.

If you’re 18 or 19, you could get paid to buy alcohol if you register with Serve Legal. This service sends young people into pubs, supermarkets and off-licences to buy alcohol, so they can check whether staff are asking for ID – pretty sure that would have been my dream job when I was 18.

Sorry to end on a dull note, but if you are able to earn extra income, don’t forget to inform HMRC. This extra money could affect the amount of tax you pay or any benefits you receive.

Can Your Car’s Computer Be Hacked By Terrorists?

By Aaron Crowe

Cars have become rolling computers, with enough computing power to run the engine, brakes and play music and give you directions.

The critical electronics systems in cars make them vulnerable to hackers, leading to “different safety and cyber security risks,” according to testimony by David Strickland, the chief administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) before a Senate committee in May. Last year the NHTSA opened a cyber terrorism department to keep track of vehicle software issues that could make them vulnerable to attack.

Hackers could take control of a car’s accelerator, brakes or deploy an airbag, for example, causing a car to crash. An investigative reporter died in a car accident in June, which former Cyber Security Czar Richard Clarke said a car cyber attack could have played a role in.

For now, there’s less chance of terrorists causing a lot of cars to crash at once because there’s not a lot of code written for malicious attacks on cars, says Damon Petraglia, an information security and forensic expert at Chartstone who has led cyber-crime and breach investigations.

But it can be done, Petraglia says, with such methods as shutting off a car’s power steering and other ways that a car is connected through the Internet.

“All they need is for a couple of people to be hurt or killed,” creating mass panic, he says.

It’s a big enough issue that U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller asked auto experts during a recent Senate Commerce Committee hearing, “Can some 14-year-old in Indonesia shut a bunch of cars down because everything is wired up?”

Some of the ways a hacker could get into a car’s computer, Petraglia says, include when a vehicle’s navigation system is updated, through a diagnostic port, and connecting a smartphone into a USB port in the car. QR codes, for example, can contain malware that can be transferred from a phone to a car, he says.

Sensors built into cars have been shown to have few security protections built in. The electronic control units used as tire pressure sensors have been used to track vehicles, and hacked to give the car bad data.

Hackers don’t have to breach a car’s software to cause an accident, but can get to them through wireless infrastructure that allows cars to be connected and warn each of speed changes, for example. The Department of Homeland Security has warned that Bluetooth-based traffic systems could be hacked.

As CheapCarInsurance.net has written before, personal information in a car can stay there after a car is sold or traded in, so it’s a good idea to have it erased from the car’s computer before you turn the car over. With all of the computing power in a car, drivers should think of safekeeping their car’s computer as much as they do at home, Petraglia says.

“We should be updating our cars’ computers as much as we do our home computers,” he says.

Pulling information from a server by accessing a website tells the server a little bit about yourself through your IP address, which lets the server know where you are.

Nissan Leaf owners ran into a possible security breach in 2011 when it was discovered that by using an Internet service in the car, their location was given to the service provider. When Leaf owners used the car’s telematics system to access websites, it gave out the car’s exact location and speed to the RSS-feed provider.

Automakers wirelessly update software, just as people do with their home computers and smartphone apps, and all are possible entryways for hackers, Petraglia says.

If hackers could get into OnStar’s RemoteLink system, they could do the same things that its customers do: Unlock car doors or turn the engine off.

Terrorists may not yet go after individual cars — preferring bigger targets with more potential victims — but that doesn’t mean that they won’t look for security breaches in cars as the newest way to panic the American public, Petraglia says.

“I don’t think it’s an area where we need to panic, but we do need to be concerned and the automobile manufacturers need to put controls in place,” he says.

There are several steps that vehicle manufacturers can take to combat hackers, says Alan Grau, president of Icon Labs, which provides security solutions for embedded devices.

One is secure boot with code validation to stop hackers from uploading malicious code into a vehicle, Grau says. Even if hackers can access the diagnostic port and upload malicious code, the secure boot would detect that the code isn’t valid and wouldn’t run the insecure code. It would only run computer codes that are certified from the manufacturer.

Another step is to add packet filtering for remote unlock and start commands that come from text messages and keychains. The vehicle would filter the message packets to ensure they’re from a trusted host, Grau says, and would prevent messages sent from hackers from being recognized.

One bit of good news for drivers is that car computers are less likely to be hacked because they’re not connected to networks. Though some cars, such as the Leaf, are connected to the Internet, and mobile phone apps make them more connected, “hacking a car’s computer is possible but very unlikely,” says Ankit Oberoi, director of Innobuzz, an IT security and ethical hacking training company.

That’s good news if you don’t use your car’s computer to get directions off the Internet or look for a restaurant while out driving. But sooner or later, you probably will.

Advanced Defensive Driving: Take it to the Next Level

Defensive driving means being in control at all times.

Defensive driving means being in control at all times. (image by gabor-nagy.com)

According to the National Safety Council, a preventable accident “is one in which the driver failed to do everything that reasonably could have been done to avoid the crash.” Experts agree that driving defensively is your best bet at making sure a crash, collision, or accident doesn’t happen to you. We’ve already discussed the basic concepts behind defensive driving, which include scanning and visualizing everything, having an escape route, and not becoming distracted. Now let’s consider some more advanced, preventive measures a responsible driver can take to avoid a potentially life-threatening crash.

Maintain Your Car

Regular maintenance on your car significantly helps its road performance, especially in potentially hazardous driving situations. You can’t drive a car defensively if its tires are in need of air, windows, rearview mirror, and signal lights are dirty, and brake pads are worn to shreds. Here are a few steps you should take to keep your car running safely and efficiently:

  • Check Your Tires Make sure your tire pressure is where it should be. The recommended pressure for your car’s tires will be in your owner’s manual or in the driver’s side door jamb. When it comes to purchasing new tires, take into account the weather in your part of the country. Four snow tires total is the safest way to go if you anticipate driving in snow and ice.
  • Align Your Tires If while driving your car seems to drift to one side or the steering wheel vibrates, you may need to have the tires aligned. Alignment actually refers to a car’s suspension, which can move out of alignment over time due to normal driving, a minor accident, or bumping against a curb. Check your owner’s manual to see how often your car’s manufacturer recommends aligning your car’s tires. Alignment helps to insure better handling, which is crucial for good defensive driving, as well as better gas mileage.
  • Clean Your Car A dirty windshield or rearview mirror will prevent you from scanning and visualizing the road for potential dangers. And grimy signal lights or head lights will prevent other drivers from seeing you in bad weather or at night, which pretty much negates any effort you make to be a good defensive driver.
  • Change Your Brake Pads If when braking, you hear squeaking or grinding, your brake pads may be worn out and in need of replacement. Knowing how and when to brake, especially in inclement weather, is a crucial skill for defensive driving. If you have an antilock brake system and need to stop in on an icy road, stomp on the pedal and when you feel the system’s pulses or hear it working, ease up a bit on the pedal until it’s only pulsing about once a second. If you don’t have ABS, you should push the brake hard and when the wheels stop turning, lift your foot so the wheels turn and rapidly press the brake again.

Other Advanced Defensive Driving Tips

  • Yield, Move, Get Out Of The Way Driving defensively for the most part involves avoiding overly aggressive drivers. It may be frustrating to just step aside in order to give a bad driver room to do whatever they want, but it is the safest thing to do, not only for yourself but for everyone else on the road. When you encounter a speeding driver pressuring you to go faster, move into another lane, even if it means going slower. As a defensive driver, accept the fact that you may have to sacrifice your right of way in order to avoid a speeding ticket or collision.
  • Plan a Route To avoid a time-consuming and potentially dangerous drive, plan out your route out in advance based on current weather, traffic, and road conditions. Local websites, radio, and even iPhone apps can provide you with the information you need before you hit the road and find yourself navigating road construction or an end-of-the-week traffic jam.
  • Take a Course There’s nothing wrong with taking a driving course to brush up your skills, even if you’ve been driving for years. The AARP even offers a very inexpensive driver safety course in both classroom and online environments. Check with your agent to see if completing a driving course will give you discount on your car insurance or on roadside assistance plans.

Illinois Financial Responsiblity (SR-22) Insurance

Financial Responsibility Insurance (SR-22) monitors the insurance of problem drivers and authorizes the Secretary of State’s office to suspend upon cancellation or expiration. Financial Responsibility Insurance is required in Illinois for individuals with safety responsibility suspensions, unsatisfied judgment suspensions, revocations, mandatory insurance supervisions and individuals who receive three or more convictions for mandatory insurance violations.

To obtain an SR-22, you must contact an insurance company authorized to write SR-22 policies for Illinois. The issuing agency also must have a power of attorney on file in Illinois. The SR-22 must be submitted on a Financial Responsibility Certificate from the home office of the insurance company. The SR-22 certificate is issued in one of the following forms:

  • Operator’s Certificate — covers the motorist in the operation of any non-owned vehicle.
  • Owner’s Certificate — covers vehicles owned by the driver. The type of vehicle must be listed on the SR-22 or may be issued for all owned vehicles.
  • Operators-Owners Certificate — covers all vehicles owned or non-owned by the driver.

When payment is made to an insurance agency, the agent will submit a request for an SR-22 certificate to the central office. The SR-22 certificate is sent directly to the Secretary of State’s office and may take up to 30 days for processing. The individual will receive a copy of the SR-22 from the insurance company and a letter from the Secretary of State’s office. The insurance must be maintained for three years. If the SR-22 expires or is cancelled, the insurance company is required by law to notify the Safety and Financial Responsibility Section by a SR-26 Cancellation Certificate. Upon receipt, the driving record will be suspended. This suspension cannot be removed until the insurance filing has been reinstated.

SR-22 insurance must be renewed a minimum of 45 days in advance to avoid future insurance-related suspensions. If the insurance agency does not receive a renewal 15 days before the insurance expiration, they are required by law to notify the Secretary of State’s office.

As an alternative to SR-22 insurance, an individual may deposit $55,000 in cash or securities with the Illinois State Treasurer, file a surety bond, or file a real estate bond approved by a court of record. Out-of-state residents may request their proof of financial responsibility for Illinois be waived by completing an Affidavit. The affidavit applies only to Illinois’ insurance requirements. In the event you move back to Illinois within three years from acceptance of the insurance waiver, your SR-22 requirement for Illinois would be reinstated.

How To Get The Best And Affordable Van Insurance Cover For You A

Investing in vans or similar vehicles has resulted in many businesses doubling or even tripling their profits because of the role these vehicles play. No matter the type of vans employed in the running of a business, the law requires that every vehicle must be covered with an up to date insurance policy before being driven on the roads or used for any business activity.

Getting the right insurance coverage for a van can become extremely expensive for businesses, especially those requiring fleet insurance for their numerous vans. So what are the most effective ways for lowering van insurance costs?

Whether renewing your current policy or buying a new policy, one of the most efficient ways for lowering your premium is to take the time out to compare different quotes from insurers. In this day and age, the way we search for information has been greatly influenced by the advent of the internet, and so provide the best place to begin your search for the least expensive van insurance quotes.

Take Time Out To Begin Your Research Online

The days of painstakingly calling and dealing with several insurers at a time to compare quotes are now over. Comparing quotes one by one is a boring and tedious way of getting cheap quotes, but with the use of comparison websites, you can get dozens of quotes within minutes thereby saving you time, energy and money . You would be able to gain access to numerous quotes from different insurers once you complete the form.

However though, not all quotes will be suitable for your needs, you will discover that some insurers will be in a much better position to provide you with a decent level of cover at a low cost rate . Before you completely commit to the insurance quote, it’s always advisable to call the insurer and discuss the terms of the policy and to see if you can even get a reduced rate for the policy.

While the net is one of the best places to commence your search, calling the quote provider to lower the quote even further is an ideal strategy to getting the cheapest premium possible. It’s a great way to discover exactly what’s contained within the policy cover you’re buying and, most importantly, what they do not include. After giving the insurance company any new information regarding your policy, they should now be in a much better state to give you their final quote.

Discuss Your Policy In Detail By Phoning The Insurer

Van insurance being a specialist type of insurance cover can be rare in comparison to all other known insurance. Not every insurance company would offer cheap policies, in particular competitive premiums. Often times, motorists prefer to go with the easy option by dealing with previous insurers they used in the past instead of trying new insurance companies. Nonetheless, if you’re serious about obtaining cheaper premiums you might just want to go deeper.

Being satisfied with your current insurer doesn’t mean you cannot go out there looking for better bargain premiums, there’s a lot to be gained by shopping around and comparing quotes. Not a lot of motorists understands that finding cheap quotes can be inexplicably very easy, what ever type of approach you adopt in finding bargain insurance quotes, your desired outcome is within your grasp.

Getting a cheaper quotation from an insurer, you can persuade other insurance companies you approach to beat that particular quote thereby making your premium even cheaper on the long run. Insurance companies are in no obligation to change the quote they’ve given you, when approached most will categorically decline your request, but it’s just a good way of establishing a medium of communication between you and the prospective insurer.

Proposed Changes To Your Coverage

Bare in mind that your utmost goal is to lower your premium quiet considerably, so you should decide what part of your policy is needed and what’s not, in order to maintain a balance between reasonable premium and adequate cover. Some policies might include other products you really do not need, for instance, step up cover, protected no claims bonus (PNCB), personal injury cover, third party injury cover, European cover, legal expenses cover and so on. There is no need allowing them in your policy when you do not need them.

Obtaining a cheap van insurance premium entails taking out any unwanted extras withing the policy so you can pay for what you require only- thereby saving you money. Don’t go increasing your level of excess by an insane amount, just make sure you aren’t paying for unwanted add- on. Getting rid of all the unwanted optional extras from your policy will help you save loads.

In a nutshell, you cannot discover cheap van insurance quotes or premiums if you do not take out time to commit towards finding it. Irrespective of you conducting researches that involves you calling your prospective insurer or getting quotes from numerous insurers, there are many different choices you could make to get you the right outcome.

How to Avoid Buying a Flood Damaged Vehicle

Flooded cars can be a nightmare for their owners.

Flooded cars can be a nightmare for their owners. (image via Gawker.com)

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

You’ve driven up to a car dealership. They have a few rows of cars of the specific make and model you’ve been interested in. They are each the current model year or perhaps just a model year behind. They all have low miles, but they’re not “new” cars. And the salesperson just cannot wait to get you into one, your choice of color and options, for a price that seems way below what you were expecting based on your research of the model.

But more than that seems “off” about some of these cars. Some of them seem to smell funny – a bitter, biting and musty smell greets your olfactory system as soon as you open the door, and there’s also a hint of “new car smell” spray and shampoo. In fact, it’s almost as if too much of that spray and shampoo smell has been applied to disguise the musty smells, and they all coalesce into a horrible shock to your senses.

“Don’t worry about that,” says your salesperson. “It’ll be gone in no time.”

Chances are, you might be about to purchase a vehicle that has been flooded.

Before we go further – it is possible to restore and refurbish a car that has been flooded, but it is not for the faint of heart. It requires disassembly of most of the interior, and replacement of all carpets, padding and upholstery. All electrical connections must be replaced. It is by no means a simple undertaking, and it must be done properly for the car to have any serviceable life. And you should know upfront what you’re buying and how detailed the restoration process is, not to mention exactly how the car was flooded. It may have been exposed to water filled with sewage, salt-water or perhaps the windows were down during a torrential downpour. It’s highly unlikely you will ever know.

While some may consider the savings on a flooded car worth the potential risks – just like many do with other automobiles with a salvage title – for most of us, they’re an experience best avoided. Here’s what you need to look for if you believe a car has been subjected to flooding in the past.

Check the Car’s Title.

Your first consideration should be the title. If the car has a clear, rather than a salvage title, make sure the dealership provides you with a vehicle history report based on the car’s VIN from a reputable industry leader, like Carfax, for example.

“Carfax should disclose that if they claim any damage from flooding to their insurance,” said Scott Bratton, a mechanic of 37 years and owner of Auto Check in Katy, Texas.

It is important to note that flood-damaged cars will only have incidents on the vehicle history report if it has been declared a total loss by an insurance company in the past. If the car was not totaled, the title will be clean and the history report may be as well. But the history report is a must, as it is possible for a car to be totaled in one state, and then shipped off to another state where eventually, a clean title is issued for the car.

“I would be concerned if it was a salvaged title. I’d ask why it was salvaged or why it was totaled. That could be due to a flood or a wreck that they went ahead and fixed with cash,” Bratton, whose customers bring in cars to be inspected before they’re purchased, explained. “For the most part I question them about where they’re buying it from. If it’s a Joe Blow lot on the side of the road then I’d really look into how they do business before I deal with them.”

Warning Signs

The musty smell isn’t the only possible hint of a flooded car. Check the car’s lights and reflectors. If they contain moisture, it is possible the car has been submerged. But the real evidence will likely be on the inside of the car.

  • Inspect the gauges on the dashboard. Again, moisture or other residues are what you are looking for. Test the operation of each gauge as well as the lighting of the gauges and the driver warning lights. They should all be operational.
  • Test everything in the car that’s electrical in nature: all switches, controls like headlights, turn signals, climate control system, stereo and any 12v auxiliary outlets. All should be operational. Check the visible wiring under the dashboard for brittleness and loss of flexibility.”If the water got high enough to get into the computers or modules, which are mounted under the seats, long-term they’ll start having problems as the moisture will cause a corrosion of the wires in the modules,” Bratton said.
  • Rust is another giveaway. Interior screws or bolts with visible rust indicate a water issue, Bratton explained. Also check the engine compartment and trunk for signs of rust as well. Any metal that is exposed – not painted or coated – and has been in contact with a significant amount of water will be rusted.
  • The padding underneath the carpet could be an indication as well since it tends to hold moisture for a long time. A visible water line could be another sign, but that would require pulling off the door panels.”If I suspected it was potentially water damaged I pull the carpet up and feel underneath it and see if the padding under the carpet has been replaced or if it feels wet,” Bratton said. “Normally we don’t pull carpets unless there’s a musty smell, because that’s hard to get rid of.”

Other potential signs include sand or grit or mud that seems to be embedded into any cracks, crevices or in the upholstery itself.

If you find any of these issues on a car, it has likely been flooded. We’d recommend you walk away, regardless of the potential savings, unless the car has been completely refurbished. If it has been, any reputable dealer would let you know upfront the history of the car with details on how it was restored. If they are hiding or denying any knowledge, despite the evidence to the contrary, then they simply do not deserve your business.

Finally, check out our visual guide to inspecting a car for evidence of flooding. It offers an easy checklist of tips of where to look and what to look for to help you determine if a vehicle has been involved in a flood.

TfL online journey planner launched

Transport for London has now launched its online journey planner for delivery drivers in London during the Olympic Games. As the area will be manic for the duration of the games, delivery drivers can use the handy tool to plan routes which avoid certain no-go areas and therefore optimise efficiency during the Games. The planner shows delivery drivers the exact spots at which they can make drop offs in case of road closures and will show routes of any road events being carried out and how these will affect delivery times.

From July, the site will be refreshed every five minutes with up to date traffic information, and any issues which may affect drivers, their routes or timings. Overall, the tool will be a godsend to many freight operators, but the general advice is still to try and keep away from the area if possible as conditions will be hectic for drivers.
