Falling demand for commercial vehicles

Across the EU, demand for commercial vehicles has dropped almost 12% over the past year. This includes sales of CVs which have also dropped off significantly since the beginning of 2011.

We’re not sure what this means for commercial vehicles, but we’re sure it has a whole lot to do with the current financial climate. Let’s hope things pick up in the commercial market and that the introduction of further electric vehicles takes off. With the Olympic Games this summer, trade and business will be busier than ever- just the boost we all need!

How to Live Out of Your Car

Most homeless people will tell you that there are two classes of homelessness: with car and without a car. If you are homeless, but still own a car, you may find yourself relying on it as a temporary shelter until you get back on your feet. Some cities have safe-parking programs that allow a person living in their car to park and sleep in a designated parking lot without fear of being hassled. However, more programs like this are needed if we, as a nation, genuinely wish to help the 3.5 million Americans who, according to the National Coalition of the Homeless, experience homelessness each year. Here are six tips for living out of your car if you are otherwise homeless.

  1. Find a place to park

Finding a place to discreetly park your car so that you can rest is tricky, since the laws regarding parking on private or public property and sleeping in your vehicle vary from state to state. If there is no safe-parking program in your city, church parking lots, 24-hour shopping centers, and neighborhoods where you can park not in front of a home, but in between a residential and business property, are all potentially safe and discreet places for you to park and sleep. Parking consistently in the same spot or neighborhood will draw attention, so try to locate several places where you can park on any given night.

  2. Truck stops, rest stops, and Walmart stores

For the weary traveler, a truck stop, rest stop, or a Pilot Travel Center are all safe, cost-free places to park and sleep. Chain truck and rest stops are well-lit and staffed with 24-hour security, and provide an oasis of amenities for the weary traveler, including showers and laundry facilities. Most, but not all, Walmart stores allow RVs and other vehicles to park overnight in their parking lots. Be sure to check with a store's manager in advance before parking and bedding down for the night.

  3. Using a car cover

Consider using a car cover if you are unable to park at a truck stop or Walmart. A car cover will help you to remain discreet wherever you park and provide you with the privacy you need in order to rest and sleep. However, a car cover may draw the attention of thieves, who will assume that underneath it is an expensive car. And while a car cover is helpful for additional warmth in winter weather, in the summer, it will turn the inside of your car into an oven.

  4. Keep your car clean

After a day or two of sleeping in your car, your car will start to stink. Try just barely cracking the windows before you go to sleep in order to keep the air inside fresh and circulating. Clean the interior and exterior of your car regularly, at a local car wash if you can afford it, just as you would if you were not homeless.

  5. Keep yourself clean

Keeping clean and looking presentable when you're homeless is challenging, but absolutely crucial if you hope to find or maintain a job. Truck and rest stops usually have showers for travelers, but using one will cost you $7 to $10. Public beaches, pools, or community centers are all places where you can grab a quick shower for free. Wet Ones can be a surprisingly refreshing and thorough way to clean yourself up if you don't have access to running water or a shower.

  6. Stay safe

Be smart about where you park your car; avoid sketchy neighborhoods, and try to park near or under a street lamp. While inside your car, make sure all four doors are always locked. If someone tries to break into your car unaware that you are inside asleep, you can almost always scare them off by honking your car horn.

How To Get The Best And Affordable Van Insurance Cover For You A

Investing in vans or similar vehicles has resulted in many businesses doubling or even tripling their profits because of the role these vehicles play. No matter the type of vans employed in the running of a business, the law requires that every vehicle must be covered with an up to date insurance policy before being driven on the roads or used for any business activity.

Getting the right insurance coverage for a van can become extremely expensive for businesses, especially those requiring fleet insurance for their numerous vans. So what are the most effective ways for lowering van insurance costs?

Whether renewing your current policy or buying a new policy, one of the most efficient ways for lowering your premium is to take the time out to compare different quotes from insurers. In this day and age, the way we search for information has been greatly influenced by the advent of the internet, and so provide the best place to begin your search for the least expensive van insurance quotes.

Take Time Out To Begin Your Research Online

The days of painstakingly calling and dealing with several insurers at a time to compare quotes are now over. Comparing quotes one by one is a boring and tedious way of getting cheap quotes, but with the use of comparison websites, you can get dozens of quotes within minutes thereby saving you time, energy and money . You would be able to gain access to numerous quotes from different insurers once you complete the form.

However though, not all quotes will be suitable for your needs, you will discover that some insurers will be in a much better position to provide you with a decent level of cover at a low cost rate . Before you completely commit to the insurance quote, it’s always advisable to call the insurer and discuss the terms of the policy and to see if you can even get a reduced rate for the policy.

While the net is one of the best places to commence your search, calling the quote provider to lower the quote even further is an ideal strategy to getting the cheapest premium possible. It’s a great way to discover exactly what’s contained within the policy cover you’re buying and, most importantly, what they do not include. After giving the insurance company any new information regarding your policy, they should now be in a much better state to give you their final quote.

Discuss Your Policy In Detail By Phoning The Insurer

Van insurance being a specialist type of insurance cover can be rare in comparison to all other known insurance. Not every insurance company would offer cheap policies, in particular competitive premiums. Often times, motorists prefer to go with the easy option by dealing with previous insurers they used in the past instead of trying new insurance companies. Nonetheless, if you’re serious about obtaining cheaper premiums you might just want to go deeper.

Being satisfied with your current insurer doesn’t mean you cannot go out there looking for better bargain premiums, there’s a lot to be gained by shopping around and comparing quotes. Not a lot of motorists understands that finding cheap quotes can be inexplicably very easy, what ever type of approach you adopt in finding bargain insurance quotes, your desired outcome is within your grasp.

Getting a cheaper quotation from an insurer, you can persuade other insurance companies you approach to beat that particular quote thereby making your premium even cheaper on the long run. Insurance companies are in no obligation to change the quote they’ve given you, when approached most will categorically decline your request, but it’s just a good way of establishing a medium of communication between you and the prospective insurer.

Proposed Changes To Your Coverage

Bare in mind that your utmost goal is to lower your premium quiet considerably, so you should decide what part of your policy is needed and what’s not, in order to maintain a balance between reasonable premium and adequate cover. Some policies might include other products you really do not need, for instance, step up cover, protected no claims bonus (PNCB), personal injury cover, third party injury cover, European cover, legal expenses cover and so on. There is no need allowing them in your policy when you do not need them.

Obtaining a cheap van insurance premium entails taking out any unwanted extras withing the policy so you can pay for what you require only- thereby saving you money. Don’t go increasing your level of excess by an insane amount, just make sure you aren’t paying for unwanted add- on. Getting rid of all the unwanted optional extras from your policy will help you save loads.

In a nutshell, you cannot discover cheap van insurance quotes or premiums if you do not take out time to commit towards finding it. Irrespective of you conducting researches that involves you calling your prospective insurer or getting quotes from numerous insurers, there are many different choices you could make to get you the right outcome.

Your biggest wastes of money

Buying flashy cars and not planning for the future are just a couple of mistakes people make with their finances.

Unfortunately, there is quite a gap between what people would like to do with their money and what they actually do. For many, buying a house, taking trips with family or even retiring may present difficulties if drastic changes aren’t made in spending and saving habits.

Financial planning is vital for attaining realistic goals. Investing for the future should be a regular habit.

Here are some common financial mistakes that people make.

Not paying bills on time

Many people look at credit cards as a means to improve their lifestyle. So the end of the month rolls around and you receive that dreaded envelope in the post from your credit card company.

If you've ever paid a bill late, you will have probably noticed that you're charged a fine.

Brushing aside your bill or ignoring it all together could be detrimental to your credit rating and cost you more through the interest payments.

Trying to make an impression

Just because your neighbour has a flashy new TV, doesn’t mean you need to get one.

Buying for status is perhaps one of the worst financial mistakes. There is no evidence to prove that impressing others with a fancy car can make you happier. In fact, the debt you take on while acquiring these assets could prove to be costly. Never think about what others have as there are financial consequences of buying more than you need.

Overusing credit cards

Time and time again cards are used to purchase the smallest of things – from a loaf of bread to a packet of crisps.

The cost of the items you have charged becomes the purchase price plus interest. Before you know it, you’ll have filled the car up with petrol, bought a new duvet cover and have acquired the entire Monty Python DVD box set. Next time you make impulsive purchases, ask yourself if what you are buying is worth the interest.

Not planning for the future

Taking control of your spending and managing your money can help pave the way to achieving financial goals.

Failure to plan ahead can be a result of inexperience or may even be attributed to ignorance and fear. Although you may not want to face the future, it is just around the corner and without significant planning, you will find life much more difficult.

Lack of life insurance and health insurance could leave you in a difficult situation if problems were to arise. After all, life insurance is an asset for an individual.

Acting as a guarantor

Those of you with good credit may sometimes be tempted to guarantee a tenancy agreement or mortgage for a friend or family member with a history of financial problems.

But be prepared for what this implies. When you guarantee a mortgage or tenancy agreement, you’re taking on a risk that a professional lender or letting agent won’t take. If they can’t repay the debt, then you will be responsible for it. You may be better off staying away from playing the sugar daddy or a good Samaritan and keep your financial records on track.

Irrespective of your situation, searching for a new van insurance policy for your new van or perhaps, wanting to renew your existing policy, doing a little research can save you time and money on the long run. Over the last decade comparison websites have sprung up to help you compare insurance quotes fast and saving you money on your premiums, use them!. While the internet is an ideal starting point for uncovering that elusive low cost van insurance premium, you also need to be prepared to contact your insurer to see what deal is available. It’s an ideal opportunity for you to determine what is contained within the policy you’re buying and what is not in it. Upon providing your new or amended details to the insurer after the initial quote, they may now use the new information to revise their previous quote which could even become cheaper still.- http://www.cheapestvaninsurance.org/

Call Up Your New Insurers To Discuss The Policy

Insurance for van is a little more of a specialist type of cover than car or even home insurance. Unfortunately, not all insurers can provide cover, in particular competitive premiums. Many a times, we avoid trying newer things instead, we stick with what we’ve been accustomed to, like getting quotes from the same insurer we’ve been with for ages . However, if you’re serious about reducing your premium you must to go the extra mile.

No matter how contented you may be with your current premium or insurer, it still pays to shop around to get even better bargain. Irrespective of the manner you search for a cheaper deal, using van insurance comparison sites or approaching individual insurers directly or through their websites, discovering discount quotes can be pretty straight forward.

If you are able to source a cheaper quote you can use that information to approach your current insurers (or indeed any others that you’re interested in) and discuss their competitor’s sites. These insurers are under no pressure to change their quotation, some might not even consider changing it, it simply establishes a medium of at least communication with the added chance of reducing your premium even further without amending your policy.

Confirming Your Policy

At this critical stage before your policy acceptance, you will be in a better position to figure out what’s best to retain or discard with your policy in order to keep your premium at a low. Typically, insurers would like to cross sell you on other insurance packages like legal expenses cover, personal injury cover, European cover and lots more. But, there isn’t any point buying any of these package when you really do not need them.

A policy thoroughly examined to strip of any unwanted extras and left with only the primary cover and protection needed. Don’t go increasing your level of excess by an insane amount, just make sure you aren’t paying for unwanted add- on. Getting rid of all the unwanted optional extras from your policy will help you save loads.

The bottom line though is when it comes to reducing van insurance premium you’ll need to be prepared to do some work. Whether that’s researching alternative providers online or phoning your current insurer to see if they can remove any unnecessary baggage, there are plenty of options to help you get the right result.

Apparently, not all insurance companies are able to returns quotes for specialists type of cover like for van insurance . Most times motorists just prefer to take the easiest option by settling for what they've been used to, in particular, things they've been familiar with in the past . For instance, there might be additional add-on included in your policy that includes: European coverage, third party injury protection cover, legal expenses cover and many more- no need including them in your policy if you don't need them.

A policy thoroughly examined to strip of any unwanted extras and left with only the primary cover and protection needed. Advanced Defensive Driving: Take it to the Next Level

Defensive driving means being in control at all times.

Defensive driving means being in control at all times. (image by gabor-nagy.com)

According to the National Safety Council, a preventable accident “is one in which the driver failed to do everything that reasonably could have been done to avoid the crash.” Experts agree that driving defensively is your best bet at making sure a crash, collision, or accident doesn’t happen to you. We’ve already discussed the basic concepts behind defensive driving, which include scanning and visualizing everything, having an escape route, and not becoming distracted. Now let’s consider some more advanced, preventive measures a responsible driver can take to avoid a potentially life-threatening crash.

Maintain Your Car

Regular maintenance on your car significantly helps its road performance, especially in potentially hazardous driving situations. You can’t drive a car defensively if its tires are in need of air, windows, rearview mirror, and signal lights are dirty, and brake pads are worn to shreds. Here are a few steps you should take to keep your car running safely and efficiently:

  • Check Your Tires Make sure your tire pressure is where it should be. The recommended pressure for your car’s tires will be in your owner’s manual or in the driver’s side door jamb. When it comes to purchasing new tires, take into account the weather in your part of the country. Four snow tires total is the safest way to go if you anticipate driving in snow and ice.
  • Align Your Tires If while driving your car seems to drift to one side or the steering wheel vibrates, you may need to have the tires aligned. Alignment actually refers to a car’s suspension, which can move out of alignment over time due to normal driving, a minor accident, or bumping against a curb. Check your owner’s manual to see how often your car’s manufacturer recommends aligning your car’s tires. Alignment helps to insure better handling, which is crucial for good defensive driving, as well as better gas mileage.
  • Clean Your Car A dirty windshield or rearview mirror will prevent you from scanning and visualizing the road for potential dangers. And grimy signal lights or head lights will prevent other drivers from seeing you in bad weather or at night, which pretty much negates any effort you make to be a good defensive driver.
  • Change Your Brake Pads If when braking, you hear squeaking or grinding, your brake pads may be worn out and in need of replacement. Knowing how and when to brake, especially in inclement weather, is a crucial skill for defensive driving. If you have an antilock brake system and need to stop in on an icy road, stomp on the pedal and when you feel the system’s pulses or hear it working, ease up a bit on the pedal until it’s only pulsing about once a second. If you don’t have ABS, you should push the brake hard and when the wheels stop turning, lift your foot so the wheels turn and rapidly press the brake again.

Other Advanced Defensive Driving Tips

  • Yield, Move, Get Out Of The Way Driving defensively for the most part involves avoiding overly aggressive drivers. It may be frustrating to just step aside in order to give a bad driver room to do whatever they want, but it is the safest thing to do, not only for yourself but for everyone else on the road. When you encounter a speeding driver pressuring you to go faster, move into another lane, even if it means going slower. As a defensive driver, accept the fact that you may have to sacrifice your right of way in order to avoid a speeding ticket or collision.
  • Plan a Route To avoid a time-consuming and potentially dangerous drive, plan out your route out in advance based on current weather, traffic, and road conditions. Local websites, radio, and even iPhone apps can provide you with the information you need before you hit the road and find yourself navigating road construction or an end-of-the-week traffic jam.
  • Take a Course There’s nothing wrong with taking a driving course to brush up your skills, even if you’ve been driving for years. The AARP even offers a very inexpensive driver safety course in both classroom and online environments. Check with your agent to see if completing a driving course will give you discount on your car insurance or on roadside assistance plans.

Auto Insurance for High Risk Motorists Now Searchable at New Insurance Website Online

Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 16, 2015

Risk level is now one important consideration for American insurance companies when supplying policies to motorists. The Insurance Pros company is now allowing searches for high risk auto insurance through its provider portal this year at http://insuranceprosusa.com/auto-insurance.html on the web.

This new portal is offered to U.S. drivers who are designated as a higher risk for automobile collisions or accidents to help find low priced insurance coverage. Every search for providers can be conducted with a zip code to increase security for a person who is only evaluating policies or prices first prior to going through with a purchase.

“There are different classes of risks that are evaluated by insurers, and drivers who are at one of the these levels usually pay for more coverage,” said one Insurance Pros source.

The searchable portal opened for motorists to explore at the Insurance Pros website also provides information about policies to car owners who are not deemed risky to insure by agencies. There are regional and national providers of liability and collision coverage plans that can now be reviewed.

“Our portal is designed for public usage and can be a good first start when estimating nearly any type of coverage plan supplied in the United States,” said the source.

The Insurance Pros USA company is continuing its efforts to showcase lower priced business insurance plans to companies this year. The searches now made at http://insuranceprosusa.com/business-insurance.html provide ways to review providers and plans designed for smaller companies.

What Women Want in Cars and How Cars Will Be Designed for Them

By Aaron Crowe

What Women Want , 2000 Film

Women are driving more, and they’re not happy about it.

More women (51 percent) than men have driver’s licenses in the United States, and while women are becoming more dominating in the car-buying process, they’re not so thrilled with what car manufacturers are offering them.

Those are the findings of two separate research reports by Frost & Sullivan, a consulting firm based in London.

Half of women globally are dissatisfied with their vehicles, while 74 percent feel they’re misunderstood by car manufacturers, according to Frost & Sullivan. As more women buy more cars, automakers will target them with cars designed for women.

What do women want in their cars?

Nissan, Ford and Volkswagen have already begun to aim new vehicles at women. Following a global trend for health and fitness, some are equipping vehicles with climate control systems for fine dust and ionising systems to filter out viruses and spores, high quality interior painting, and ergonomic seating.

The study identified eight key design trends for cars aimed at women:

  • A customized, spacious cabin.
  • High visibility around the vehicle and a sunroof.
  • Green credibility and low CO2 emissions.
  • Intuitive controls.
  • Wellness features.
  • High quality materials such as leather seating.
  • Auto assist functions such as park assist and sensorial doors.
  • Personalization options such as special pedals for long heels.

Another report by the same company found that cars will become more customized, particularly small city cars, with women influencing 80 percent of car buying decisions.

Some of the factors women deemed important when buying a car were spaciousness, safety, quality of materials, color and sustainability. They preferred options such as park assist, clear lighting for gas, easy access, integrated systems for mobile devices and entertainment, and will favor future cars with advanced systems such as autonomous driving, digital assistants and other health, wellness and well-being features.

Cars designed for women

To help sell the Porsche Macan to women, tennis star Maria Sharapova was hired by Porsche in April 2013 as a brand ambassador, since 85 percent of Porsche buyers are men. The car is big enough to handle a sizable Coscto haul but still drives like a sports car. The Macan has thousands of dollars worth of customization options, including colors such as “luxor beige” instrument dials, and noise-insulating privacy glass.

The 2014 Mercedes S Class has a cabin designed for “energizing fitness” with options such as a perfume atomizer, ionising air system and no plastic. There are 100 electric motors to move the seats, which have a massage option based on hot stone massage principles.

A place to put a purse

We talked with women about what they want in a new car, and one of the most popular requests was for a place to put their purse. Yvonne Miaoulis, a marketing manager for Baroan Technologies, reiterated what Rashida Jones wrote on Twitter: “Note to all people who design cars: Stop ignoring women’s purses and give us a place to put them that’s not our passenger’s lap.”

If a passenger is riding in the front seat, the handbag “has to go in the back or on the floor where it gets dirty or stepped on,” says Khadi Madama, who works at Yours Truly, a media services company.

“Ladies rely on their handbags to keep essentials that men simply just don’t need — and if they do need something — they rely on their wives or girlfriends to ‘just happen to have it’ in their bag,” Madama says.

Another popular request was heated seats, especially in snowy or cold climates.

“As we move into the winter months, I’m reminded how much I miss having heated seats,” says Megan Ingenbrandt, a public relations specialist for eZanga.com. “I personally enjoy this more than having hot air blowing directly at my face or body, because it’s more relaxing during your commute. Plus, there’s nothing worse than a cold leather seat.”

Linda Carlson, a marketing consultant in Seattle, not only wants heated seats in a new car, but a rear-window wiper, excellent visibility and power on hills. Carlson also likes having roadside assistance as part of the warranty, even for flat tires.

Horsepower was also important to Stephanie Hamilton, a communications manager at HappyFox, a helpdesk software provider. Hamilton says she used to own nothing but German cars for their horsepower.

She now owns a Jeep Wrangler Limited that has power everything: navigation, multimedia, heated seats and power outlets for charging iPads, phones and other devices.

Stacy Geisinger of Stacyknows.com already has a feature many people want in their cars — a backup camera — but Geisinger wants it to do more. “I really wish it took pictures so that when someone tailgates me, I can get a picture of their license plate and report them,” she says.

Federal law will require backup cameras on all vehicles built in and after May 2018, though they’re not required to be able to take photographs.

Car features aren’t the only areas where car companies are trying to attract more female customers. A pilot  Nissan dealership in Japan is run entirely by women, with the intent to make the shopping experience more welcoming and seemless.

Female concierges are available to provide child care during car viewing appointments, and female mechanics are there to explain anything without unnecessary auto jargon.

Should integral communications systems be as standard in vans?

It has been suggested that integral communications systems in vans should be made an as standard addition by van manufacturers, as an increasing number of van operators would benefit greatly from communication devices which helped them to stay in touch with colleagues or customers.

A range of communication equipment that adheres to stringent safety guidelines could allow business van drivers to improve their overall performance and productivity, perhaps with the use of a smart phone- utilising its multiple functions (sat nav, email, calls etc.)

Vans fitted with integral communications systems would also sell well on the used van market. Currently used van sales are high for vans fitted with satellite navigation systems- so one can only predict that full communications systems would fare well too.

How to Beat a Speeding Ticket in Court

By Michael Giusti

It may be infuriating — and expensive — to get a traffic ticket, but if you are diligent there may be hope for you even after the officer hands you a citation.

That is because, according to motorist advocates, if you do a little homework and fight your ticket, you can often get that ticket reduced or even wiped from your record.

There are no direct statistics tracking how many people win cases in traffic court nationwide, said John Bowman, communications director for the drivers’ advocacy group, the National Motorists Association, based in Waunakee, Wisconsin.

“So, it’s hard to predict how any individual case will turn out,” Bowman said. “But I can tell you that if you don’t show up, you have lost already.”

A traffic ticket is costly, with fines sometimes reaching into the four-digits.

And the costs of a traffic citation don’t end once you pay your fine. After the citation makes its way onto your driving record, you will also likely be facing an increased monthly insurance bill.

Ticket Costs

What that specific repercussion will be depends on a lot of factors, said Gary Stephenson, a spokesman for State Farm Mutual Automotive Insurance Co., based in Bloomington, Illinois.

Stephenson said insurance companies take a number of factors into consideration when considering your citation, such as whether this was your first ticket or fourth, and how large the fine was.

“Flagrant violations could be viewed differently than very ‘minor’ violations,” Stephenson said.  “There is no cookie-cutter answer.”?

But on the other end of the spectrum, a third ticket in as many months may end up causing the company to cancel your insurance altogether.

While each incident may have different repercussions, one rule of thumb used by traffic attorneys and advocates is that your insurance will go up by the formula of (Your Fine + $50) x 5.

So, a $100 fine could end up costing you $750 or more of increased insurance costs over the next few years.

And if your job is driving, such as a commercial trucker, getting a moving violation may even cost you your job.

Ready to Rumble

Once you get that ticket, Bowman said your options are “fairly limited.”

“You can pay and move on and watch your insurance go up, or you can fight it,” Bowman said.

The National Motorists Association estimates that only about 5 percent of all drivers who get a traffic ticket bother to contest it in court.

“Those are the people who will come out ahead,” Bowman said.

The National Motorists Association published an e-book for its members with strategies of fighting a traffic citation in court. The association also has a network of members across the nation who volunteer to advise motorists who want to fight their ticket in court.

The only way to win in court is to mount a logical and organized defense, said “Radar” Roy Reyer, speeding ticket avoidance tactics and product expert.

Reyer is the publisher of RadarBusters.com and wrote the book “How to Beat Your Speeding Ticket in Court and Win.”  He is also a retired sheriff lieutenant and was a certified radar and laser instructor who “taught thousands of cops to write tickets.”

He said that to win, you need to do a “big homework assignment.”

“It is definitely going to take time to fight it properly,” Reyer said.

If motorists have any hopes of actually winning in court, they need to do better than just showing up and saying “trust me your honor, I wasn’t speeding.”

“Who will the judge believe,” Reyer said. “The officer trained in police radar and speed recognition, or someone who is just driving down the street?”

For the Record

But that doesn’t mean that motorists should abandon hope of beating a ticket in court.

“There are things that you can do to prepare — standard defenses,” Bowman said.

Discovery is when your homework begins.

“Subpoena everything you can,” Reyer said. “You want records, the manual for the radar gun, the officer’s training records — everything.”

One common defense is challenging the calibration record of the radar or laser gun.

“Most people consider radar guns as infallible, but they do make errors and so do the operators,” Bowman said.

Every radar gun needs to be calibrated at the beginning and end of every shift, Reyer said.

“A lot of cops don’t remember to do that,” Reyer said.

Reyer said he is helping a man in Connecticut who is fighting a ticket right now who was able to prove that the department hadn’t calibrated the gun in three years.

“And that goes against the standards published by the International Association of Chiefs of Police,” Reyer said. “That is powerful and damning evidence.”

Officers typically use a special tuning fork to establish that calibration. And that is another area that motorists should subpoena.

“If you drop a tuning fork, it is now out of frequency, and that is one of the items that has to be calibrated,” Reyer said.

And even if everything has been calibrated, every officer writing tickets should also prove they are certified to use the equipment with which they are recording speed.

“I am constantly surprised by how many agencies forget to certify,” Reyer said.

However, calibration and certification are now common tactics, which means many agencies are now more diligent, Bowman said.

And that is when motorists need to move to less common areas to protest the fine.

“It never hurts to go back to the scene of the incident and take down some notes and take some photographs,” Bowman said. “Was there a speed limit sign? Was it visible? Was it properly posted with the proper speed? Were there characteristics that would hinder the officers’ ability to see you?”

You should also scour the ticket itself for typos or incorrect details. Also check for nearby power substations or power lines, which might interfere with readings.

And any evidence will also help, such as GPS readings, dash cams, or anything else that might prove that you were not, in fact speeding.

Day in court

But If you just show up in court and argue, you will lose.

“It comes down to who has the better evidence,” Reyer said. “I used to laugh my ass off because people didn’t prepare. They showed up in court without records or documents, and it was just his word against yours.”

It is also important to dress to impress and to stay calm and respectful while you are in the courtroom, and you never want to lie, which could earn you a contempt of court charge.

And if you are lucky, sometimes merely showing up means that you win.

“If the officer does not show up, move for dismissal. Most times it will be granted,” Bowman said.

You can also negotiate with the prosecutor or magistrate for a plea deal that would allow you to pay your fine but keep the moving violation off your record.

“Most people just don’t want those points,” Bowman said. “They are happy to pay if they can drop the points, and lets be honest, all the courts want is the money, so they will bargain with you.”

But none of that is possible if you don’t show up to fight in the first place.

Norwegian-German power cable project delayed until 2019

The first power cable interconnection between Norway and Germany will be in place by the end of 2019, a year later than originally planned, due to insufficient cable production capacities, Norway's grid operator, Statnett, said on Tuesday. The link would enable Norway to import cheaper wind and solar power from Germany while storing energy in its water reservoirs, and export power to Germany when output from intermittent renewables drop there.

The truth behind car insurance myths

Everyone knows red cars are more expensive to insure, right? Wrong.

With the latest data from the AA revealing that the average comprehensive premium now costs £1,035.45, car insurance is a huge investment for most drivers.

Worryingly, however, there are a number of myths and misconceptions around car insurance. If you fall for one of these, you could end up overpaying for your cover or potentially invalidate your policy.

We reveal some of the most common car insurance myths.

If I don’t drive my car I don’t need insurance
Wrong. The Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) law requires all registered vehicles to have insurance. It had previously only been illegal to drive uninsured, however, this law, which took effect last year requires all vehicles that are taxed to be insured, even if they are not used.

Those of you who own a car that is not insured must either take out insurance or make a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN) with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) – even if you don't drive it.

If I get a speeding ticket my insurance rates will go up
A number of factors come into play here. Your first minor speeding ticket may not have an affect on your insurance rate. However, the speed you were travelling and the frequency of infractions will play a role in determining your premiums.

If I have comprehensive cover I will be insured abroad
A fully comprehensive insurance policy provides the most extensive cover if you’re driving on British roads. Once you leave the UK, however, you may find your level of protection plummets significantly.

For instance, some insurers will only offer you third party cover abroad even if you are fully comprehensive in the UK. This means the company would only reimburse other people for their injuries and damaged property. Other companies will only pay out if you have provided advance warning you will be driving in another country.

Before you head off on holiday, it would be wise to check your policy’s fine print.

My insurance will be more expensive because I am a man
From 21 December this year, insurers can no longer take gender into account as a risk factor when calculating the cost of insurance cover the European Union’s top court has ruled.

Historically, young women have paid significantly less than their male counterparts for their insurance premiums because women are less likely to be involved in an accident.

As a result of this ruling, it’s likely that premiums will increase substantially for many female drivers.

If I buy a red car it will cost more to insure
Wrong. This is a common misconception. Many believe that insurers automatically associate red with youth and aggressive driving but in reality, insurance companies are colour blind.

A spokesman from the AA said that there is no statistical evidence that a red car will increase your insurance premium. Insurers decide what rate you will pay based on the vehicle's year, make, model, body type, and engine size. Other factors that come into play are your driving record, safety statistics, price, and how attractive your vehicle is to thieves.
