Fantastic turnout for Commercial Vehicle Show 2012

Crowds numbered over 16000 at this year’s CV Show, up by 10% on last year’s figures and an impressive feat given the current state of our economic climate, especially as many of those in attendance were buyers.

Show organisers were more than happy with such a fantastic turnout and just what the CV Show 2012 has proved about the commercial vehicle market- it remains sufficiently healthy despite the decline of other industries in the UK, defying economic uncertainty.

These figures also bode well for 2013, when the Commercial Vehicle will also be able to boast official international accreditation. All this seems to promise an even bigger and even better show for next year.

Van operator licensing legislation passed in Northern Ireland

The Goods Vehicles Licensing of Operators Transport Bill submitted by Environment minister Alex Attwood has been passed by the Northern Ireland Assembly. This legislation is something which the Freight Transport Association has campaigned for, for many years.

Put into action, this system will extend Operator Licensing to all operators of commercial vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes. It is designed to improve road safety and environmental standards, whilst helping to nurture fairer competition through tackling organised crime. Legislation of a similar nature has been enforced for many years throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Therefore, this decision will bring Northern Ireland in line with the rest of the UK.

Tom Wilson, head of FTA policy, Northern Ireland: “The final hurdle has been cleared and the much needed legislation has now been approved…We acknowledge the Minister’s support and commitment to making this important piece of road safety legislation a reality.”

Sitting Your Kids Below The Ages Of 2 Within A Rear Facing Position Is Notably Less compromising In comparison with Any Other Sitting Position Claims The United states School For Pediatrics

This innovative discoveries by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) will surprise most parents / guardians in to altering their unconventional practices of safeguarding their infants inside vehicles.

Enclosed inside a new policy released in the issue of April 2011 of Pediatric medicine, fathers and mothers are advised to keep their children within a rear-facing infant car seat up till the age of two or better still when they have gotten to the required height and also body weight for their specified seat. Also, the AAP also reminded parents about the basic requirement for their children to use booster seats that seat belt positioned until the height of 4' and 9" in height as well as reaching the ages of 8-12 years of age.

A previous policy published in 2002 also advised that it is much safer for toddlers and infants to be placed in a rear facing up position up to the limits of the car seat, also indicating age 12 months and 20 pounds as absolute minimum. Noticeably, a huge percentage of parents were observed changing their child's car seat position to a front facing one from rear-faced position upon their babies turning one.

"Transition from one stage to another often gets parents excited, but these transitions must generally be delayed until they are absolutely necessary, as the child fully develop and outgrows the restrictions for his or her present stage," said Dennis Dubin, MD, FAAP, leader and author of the policy statement as well as the accompanying technical report.

"A rear-facing child safety seat does a better job of supporting the head, neck and spine of infants and toddlers in a crash, because it distributes the force of the collision over the entire body," dr durbin said. "with larger kids, a harness fitted forward facing seat is a lot safer than booster seats, and a belt positioning booster seat gives the most protection possible than just a seat belt alone until the seat belt can work correctly."

While the rate of deaths in motor vehicle crashes in children under age 16 has decreased substantially, dropping 45 percent between 1997 and 2009, it is still the leading cause of death for children ages 4 and older. Totalling children and teenagers up to the ages of 21 years, over 5,000 deaths are recorded each year. The amount of casualties can be alarming: for every fatality, approximately 18 children get admitted in hospital while more than four hundred are seriously injured enough to need medical assistance.

Results from research made have uncovered the truth that kids are safer in rear-facing car seats. The 2007 journal injury prevention study unveiled that children within the ages of 2 yr were 75% less likely to be killed or obtain very severe injuries in the event of a crash if they are sat in a rear facing manner.

The age 2 recommendation is not a deadline, but rather a guideline to help parents decide when to make the transition, Dr. Durbin said. Smaller children will benefit from remaining rear-facing longer, while other children may reach the maximum height or weight before 2 years of age.

Children must be transitioned from a rear facing car seat to a forward facing car seat that comes with harness for optimal safety, this should continue until they reach the required height and weight. Then a booster will make sure the vehicle's lap-and-shoulder belt fit properly. The correct positioning of the seat belt should be for it to lie across in between the shoulder and the chest rather than laying across the face or the neck- as this can be dangerous in the event of an accident .

While the lap belt on the other hand must fit low and snug on the upper thighs and hips instead of the belly. A number kids will most definitely require a booster seat until they've grown till four feet and nine inches tall as well as being 8 to 12 years of age.

Children should ride in a http://www.primoeurobath.com/booster-seat.html or an http://www.primoeurobath.com/infant-car-seat.html in the rear of a vehicle until they are 13 years old.

An appropriate age and size restraints are still needed for children under the ages of 2 years to ride on the laps of an adult even though the Federal Aviation Authority permits kids to ride on adult's laps.

Just to recap, whatsoever method of transportation, children must be secured or restrained adequately to avoid severe injuries should an accident occur, whether by air, sea or land kids should always be retrained properly, Dr Durbin said. http://www.primoeurobath.com/, http://www.primoeurobath.com/baby-strollers.html, http://www.primoeurobath.com/baby-monitor.html and safe http://www.primoeurobath.com/baby-swings.html are a few of the most valuable baby products recommended for kids safety in their everyday life.

What commercial van insurance can I choose for my vehicles?

If your van is mainly for commercial purpose of doing business then you’ll be required to get a commercial van insurance. The objective of a commercial van insurance cover is for the protection of your van with any content that may be included inside, it also covers your business against any eventualities that may occur in future.

To keep your business healthy and profitable, you must ensure that your business overheads are kept to a minimum by reducing all expenses charged to the business. This also entails looking for a cheap van insurance cover for your vans. Purchasing the cheapest insurance possible will save you money initially but remember that your business could lose out substantially if you don’t have the correct type of cover, so analysis your insurance needs carefully before agreeing on a policy.

Most insurance cover are quiet dependent on a number of factors to determine whether it suits your purpose or not. Criteria like the type of vehicle your insuring, it’s capacity, the term of the policy and most importantly the kind of services you’ll be rendering with your van.- http://www.cheapestvaninsurance.org/

Most insurance firms provide insurance cover for different organizations that ranges from big organizations, private firms and even sole proprietors. And the caliber of cover they provide also ranges from one organization to the other. There are 3 major range of insurance coverage you can expect from most insurance companies; they include third party commercial insurance policy, third party fire and theft cover and fully comprehensive cover.

The fully comprehensive insurance coverage is for the protection of every eventualities perhaps that’s why it’s the most cumbersome and most expensive policy you can buy. This kind of insurance policy insures the liability for loss of life or personal injury to any individual in the van as well as protecting any kind of destruction to the property of the other party.

Apart from the protections mentioned earlier, comprehensive policies does also covers damages to your van as well as third party’s vehicle. In addition, accidents, fire and theft, vandalism are also covered as well as being provided a courtesy van when your van’s being repaired. If you store tools in your van subsequently it is really worth confirming that these will also be protected by your comprehensive insurance coverage.

Third party fire and theft Insurance policy will protect any kind of loss as well as damages induced by a third party, specifically criminal damage, car accident, fire, theft or burglary. It is worth observing that this particular kind of insurance coverage would certainly not protect you if your van was damaged by a motorist who did not possess insurance policy.

The last and final insurance cover is the third party commercial cover. Often the least expensive out of the entire three policies and also very basic or simple cover, it protects your van against damages caused to a third party only. Third party policy cover do not often cover against business vans. So, if your involved in an accident then you will be personally responsible for the cost of repairing the third party’s vehicle.

If you have an aged van or do not feel that your van is not worth very much then you can take out a third party commercial van insurance coverage to satisfy your legal responsibility of getting your van covered.

Irrespective of the way you use your business van, you could also customize your policy with additional features and add on provided by your insurance providers, for instance, policies that offer you the benefit of driving other cars or driving abroad and most importantly legal expenses cover.

When is a Car Considered “Totaled”?

Recently a New Jersey father took his young son down to a local river to watch and feed the birds. As he slowed the vehicle in preparation to park it, the boy bolted from the car and headed for the river’s edge. The understandably panicked father also jumped out of the vehicle to prevent his son from falling down the embankment. While he saved his son, his vehicle went off the road, rolled down the embankment, and ended up in the water.

The story has a happy ending as far as father and son are concerned, but the vehicle is another story. Although it started right up as soon as police fished it from the water, the owner told reporters he assumed his car insurance company would total it.

His comment raises an interesting question. If the engine runs normally and there appears to be no major structural damage, why would an insurance company total it? To understand that, we must look at some other factors.

What It Means to Be “Totaled”

Before talking about the vehicle and the damage it might have sustained, it’s important to first understand what it means when a car is “totaled.” When a car insurance company uses that designation they are essentially saying the car is a total loss from a financial standpoint. In other words, regardless of whether the owner purchased the cheapest car insurance possible or a top-of-the-line policy, the insurance company has decided they will spend less money to replace it then to repair it.

In most states when a car insurance company totals a vehicle they take ownership of that vehicle once the owner accepts a claim check and cashes it. If the insurance carrier believes it can make a little money by selling the vehicle at a salvage auction they will make arrangements to come and tow it from the customer’s property. If they decide they can’t make any money they will sometimes tell the customer to dispose of it as they see fit. Either way, the car insurance company has the final say.

What May Have Happened

In the case of a New Jersey man, we don’t know exactly sort of damage was incurred by his vehicle. But there are couple of things we can speculate on. First of all, regardless of whether or not he had cheap car insurance we can say that he did have collision and comprehensive coverage; otherwise, the idea of the insurance company totaling the vehicle would be irrelevant. Knowing that, we can look at a couple of things that might have driven the repair costs too high.

If the front end of the vehicle suffered body damage when it hit the river bed, or perhaps dents and dings on its way down the hill, they could result in repair costs of up to several thousand dollars. The insurer must also consider having the engine taken apart and checked for water damage despite the fact the vehicle started right up.

Third, there’s the issue of drying out the vehicle’s interior; this might be the most costly part of the procedure. In order to prevent mold from growing the car’s interior would have to be dismantled, disinfected, and properly dried. That job would probably be worth at least several thousand dollars if the potential water damage was serious.

If you add up the costs of all three types of repair work it’s conceivable a claim could cost the car insurance company $8K-$10K. If the vehicle is more than three or four years old it could be replaced for less money.

Your biggest wastes of money

Buying flashy cars and not planning for the future are just a couple of mistakes people make with their finances.

Unfortunately, there is quite a gap between what people would like to do with their money and what they actually do. For many, buying a house, taking trips with family or even retiring may present difficulties if drastic changes aren’t made in spending and saving habits.

Financial planning is vital for attaining realistic goals. Investing for the future should be a regular habit.

Here are some common financial mistakes that people make.

Not paying bills on time

Many people look at credit cards as a means to improve their lifestyle. So the end of the month rolls around and you receive that dreaded envelope in the post from your credit card company.

If you've ever paid a bill late, you will have probably noticed that you're charged a fine.

Brushing aside your bill or ignoring it all together could be detrimental to your credit rating and cost you more through the i...

Endsleigh trumps its own car insurance offer

When I said that I had started part-time work in a student bar my premium increased by over £400

I'm a 20-year-old student in Bristol. Last year my fully comprehensive car insurance with Endsleigh was about £1,200 with two years no-claims.

This year's renewal letter informed me that with a change of address and the car now parked in my road – but three years no claims – my premium would be £900. However, when I rang to change my annual mileage down to 4,000 miles I also disclosed that I now work part-time, a few hours a week in a student bar.

Imagine my surprise when my premium was recalculated to be more than £1,300. It makes me question the point of even bothering to get a job if it's going to cost me two months' wages in car insurance. Insurers, it would seem, would consider it safer if I were less financially secure and spending my nights clubbing rather than working. WG, Bristol

This is curious, as we thought the rise might be explained by the increased risk the late-night driving at the end of a bar shift might entail, but Endsleigh says the premium rise is not linked to your new job.

It says something around credit scoring changed between the time you got the quote and the time you made the alterations to the policy. Endsleigh is quick to emphasise this may not be your personal credit score, but could be a change in the credit score of the postcode area you are in, which can apparently change on a daily basis.

Nevertheless, we suggested you check your credit score online with one of the credit reference agencies to see if there was something amiss. You didn't need to; as it turned out you had been back online to search for a cheaper quote and got one for close to the £900 you had expected to pay – and the quote was from … Endsleigh.

In cases we have dealt with like this before, it has been the person on the end of the telephone who has made a mistake that has led to a sharp increase in a premium. Despite what Endsleigh says, we suspect the same happened here.

Our advice to other readers who find themselves with similar unexplained increases is not to begrudgingly accept the rise but to run your details through an online price comparison website or via a telephone broker to see if you can get a better deal.

The truth behind car insurance myths

Everyone knows red cars are more expensive to insure, right? Wrong.

With the latest data from the AA revealing that the average comprehensive premium now costs £1,035.45, car insurance is a huge investment for most drivers.

Worryingly, however, there are a number of myths and misconceptions around car insurance. If you fall for one of these, you could end up overpaying for your cover or potentially invalidate your policy.

We reveal some of the most common car insurance myths.

If I don’t drive my car I don’t need insurance
Wrong. The Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) law requires all registered vehicles to have insurance. It had previously only been illegal to drive uninsured, however, this law, which took effect last year requires all vehicles that are taxed to be insured, even if they are not used.

Those of you who own a car that is not insured must either take out insurance or make a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN) with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) – even if you don't drive it.

If I get a speeding ticket my insurance rates will go up
A number of factors come into play here. Your first minor speeding ticket may not have an affect on your insurance rate. However, the speed you were travelling and the frequency of infractions will play a role in determining your premiums.

If I have comprehensive cover I will be insured abroad
A fully comprehensive insurance policy provides the most extensive cover if you’re driving on British roads. Once you leave the UK, however, you may find your level of protection plummets significantly.

For instance, some insurers will only offer you third party cover abroad even if you are fully comprehensive in the UK. This means the company would only reimburse other people for their injuries and damaged property. Other companies will only pay out if you have provided advance warning you will be driving in another country.

Before you head off on holiday, it would be wise to check your policy’s fine print.

My insurance will be more expensive because I am a man
From 21 December this year, insurers can no longer take gender into account as a risk factor when calculating the cost of insurance cover the European Union’s top court has ruled.

Historically, young women have paid significantly less than their male counterparts for their insurance premiums because women are less likely to be involved in an accident.

As a result of this ruling, it’s likely that premiums will increase substantially for many female drivers.

If I buy a red car it will cost more to insure
Wrong. This is a common misconception. Many believe that insurers automatically associate red with youth and aggressive driving but in reality, insurance companies are colour blind.

A spokesman from the AA said that there is no statistical evidence that a red car will increase your insurance premium. Insurers decide what rate you will pay based on the vehicle's year, make, model, body type, and engine size. Other factors that come into play are your driving record, safety statistics, price, and how attractive your vehicle is to thieves.

6 Celebrities Who Should Never be Allowed to Drive Again

Celebrities are notorious for being really, really bad drivers. Sure, they have to dodge pestering photogs on a daily basis and have busy schedules that require them to drive around town, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have to abide by the same traffic laws as normal non-celebrity drivers. You’d think with all that money and need for privacy they’d rather have a personal chauffeur, but it’s quite the contrary for most celebs. Even near-death car accidents, DUIs, and countless run-ins with the paparazzi aren’t enough to stop them from speeding in their stupidly expensive cars and driving on suspended licenses. So, before you beat yourself up over the occasional speeding ticket or fender bender, be glad your driving record is nowhere near as bad as these six celebs who we think should never be allowed to drive again.

  1. Lindsay Lohan:

If there was ever an award for “Most Likely to Total a Car While Drunk/Stoned Out of Your Mind,” it would go to Lindsay Lohan. The troubled actress has been involved in more accidents and run-ins with the law than we can keep track of. The saga began in 2007, when Lohan was arrested for drunken driving and cocaine possession after allegedly chasing a woman in her SUV. Months later, Lohan managed to get pulled over again and arrested for another DUI and cocaine possession charge. The debacles only continued. Over the last two years, Lohan has been sued for a hit-and-run, pulled over for running a stop sign, and involved in multiple fender benders, including one where she ran into the back of an 18-wheeler. If this doesn’t sound like someone who should have their driving privileges revoked forever, then you must be just as bad a driver as Lindsay.

  2. Amanda Bynes:

Amanda Bynes has quickly gone from an innocent movie star to a dangerous diva behind the wheel. During this year alone, Bynes has been involved in multiple hit-and-run accidents and was arrested for DUI after side-swiping a police car. The 26-year-old starlet even went as far as tweeting Barack Obama, asking him to “fire the cop who arrested me.” Even after all of her driving disasters, Bynes continued to drive on a suspended license until her car was (finally!) impounded. Anyone who isn’t afraid to strike a cop car and drive off is probably capable of doing a lot worse.

  3. Billy Joel:

Billy Joel has had many hits during his lifetime, including ones with his cars. The Grammy Award-winning singer has had his fair share of car accidents, including three wrecks between 2007 and 2009. Perhaps the most embarrassing one of all was when he lost control of his vintage 1967 Citroen and crashed into a house in New York. Unlike some of Joel’s past accidents, there was no suspicion of alcohol or drug involvement in this particular incident; the guy was just going out to get a pizza! Regardless, we can all agree this Piano Man should take a backseat and let someone else do the driving from now on.

  4. Britney Spears:

Whether she’s behind the wheel or trying to get out of a limo, pop princess Britney Spears has had many embarrassing car moments throughout her career. Her most infamous WTF moment has to be when she was photographed driving through Los Angeles with her infant son in her lap. Mothers everywhere were horrified to see Spears driving her car with one hand and holding her son in the other. She claimed a “horrifying, frightful encounter with the paparazzi” caused her to make this bonehead move instead of strapping her child in a car seat in the back. Months later and “Oops! She did it again.” This time Spears reportedly ran a red light with her young children in the car and was charged with a hit and run within the same year.

  5. Paris Hilton:

If Paris Hilton was smart (and we’ve already ruled this one out), she would use her inheritance money to buy herself a full-time driver so she could make her way off this list. But, by the looks of her disastrous driving record, this won’t be happening anytime soon. In 2006, Hilton was arrested and charged with a DUI. In 2007, she was pulled over for driving with a suspended license. One month later, she was pulled over again for driving 70 mph in a 35 mph zone without her headlights on after dark. Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating the terms of her probation. But even after doing “hard” time in jail, the socialite managed to screw up again and was arrested for possession of marijuana and cocaine on separate occasions.

  6. Nicole Richie:

Just like her former gal pal Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie has had plenty of driving disasters of her own. The most notable incident happened in 2006, when the socialite was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol after motorists reported seeing a Mercedes-Benz G-Class entering the highway via the exit ramp and driving in the opposite direction. Richie failed a field sobriety test and admitted to using marijuana and Vicodin before driving. Anyone who can’t tell the difference between exit and enter ramps shouldn’t be allowed to drive a car. Ever.

Ever.

Consumerwatchdog, the Libya Tragedy and a Californian Auto Insurance Campaign CarInsuranceCalculator.info Wraps Up: What Consumers Need to Know About Prop 33

New York (PRWEB) October 29, 2012

On September the 13th 2012 a spokesperson of Consumerwatchdog, a Californian consumer advocacy group commented on heavy comparisons used in their struggle against the overhaul of a Californian auto insurance law. More precisely, Jamie Court drew the conclusion that the ad campaign http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/story/consumer-watchdog-slams-calif-prop-33-campaign-over-libya-tragedy [supporting __title__ ] the new draft of the law would be spitting in the eyes of foreign service officers and other heroes following with the Libya tragedy (used by proponents in this very ad campaign) as explicit example of how the law could disadvantage military staff (cf. sources above). Proponents of the law of course stress that Prop 33 enjoys the support of the military from day one. Since then, the campaign on both sides has been continued in heated discussions across national media.

Giving examples is always a good method of explaining the impact of a law to be introduced, tells Steven, project manager at CarInsuranceCalculator.info, However, our team thinks it is most beneficial now to take a step back and to have actually a look on what the draft actually states and to assess the pros and cons.

On this occasion, CarInsuranceCalculator.info provides a new guide to proposition 33 on their website at: http://www.carinsurancecalculator.info/1063/splitting-hairs-or-spitting-in-the-eyes-prop-33-fight-continues-all-you-should-know-about-proposition-33/ also accessible using the short link: http://bit.ly/TofQSg

The guide provides a fact sheet, essential pros and cons to Prop 33 and a complete history of the law and the controversy surrounding it.

Proposition 33, or Prop 33, is aimed at tackling the unresolved problem regarding uninsured drivers, which may account for up to 15% of all California drivers. To reward drivers which continuously purchase at least the insurance limits required by law Prop 33 will allow them to switch insurance companies and to maintain their existing discounts they enjoyed with the previous carrier. Currently, California drivers will lose their existing discounts when switching their carrier.

It is hard to speak about having the freedom to choose a carrier if consumers are financially punished for the mere fact of switching or shopping for a better deal, continues Steve, nevertheless, there are legitimate doubts that the law can really provide the incentive for uninsured motorists to purchase insurance, if premiums for this very segment will rise.

Top Car Maintenance Tips for Teens

A survey says many teens are “completely clueless” when it comes to car maintenance. (Photo credit: Flickr Creative Commons: Joseph Gilbert)

When teenagers (ages 16 - 20) have their own cars, the danger of them crashing it are 2 and 1/2 times more likely than the teens who used the “family car.” So those priviledged few teens who are responsible for their own car should also consider themselves warned — things can go wrong and you can avoid many dangers by learning good maintenace habits.

Yes, teens have much to learn about keeping safely out of a crash, but a recent survey shows that young drivers know even less about car maintenance. According to a recent survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two-thirds of teens are rated by their parents as “somewhat or completely clueless” when it comes to how to take care of their car.

This spurred the folks at AutoMD.com to put together six tips for teens (and parents) to keep their cars running well with the ultimate goal for staying safe on the road.

  1. Know your car’s maintenance intervals and keep up with service.
Look at your owner’s manual and find the car’s required maintenance schedule. This tells you when to have the fluids, tires, brakes, and oil and filter changes.
  2. Take care of your tires — make sure they can get you to school, work, etc.
Keep your tires properly inflated and watch for tire wear. Consult your owner’s manual or tire sticker on the door jamb for manufacturer-recommended tire pressure settings. Also, look at your tires for wear and tear every time you stop for gas.
  3. Don’t ignore dashboard warning lights
Dashboard warning lights serve as notification that something may be wrong with your car. The warnings include Check Engine, Oil, Temperature, Brake, Tire sensors and more, depending on the car’s technology. Read the owner’s manual and pay close attention to the lights, what they mean, and how you should respond to them.
  4. Don’t let your car run too low, or out of gas
Like food, your car needs fuel to survive. Today’s cars are not made to run all the way to the last drop, as many have fuel-injected engines that use gas to cool and lubricate their components. A good rule of thumb is to keep the fuel level above a quarter tank to keep your car running well, and to avoid being stranded on the side of the road.
  5. Steer clear — take care of your windshield
The windshield is like the eye of your car. Therefore, it is critical to keep it clean and clear for safe driving. Wiper blades that have cracks or that skip, streak, or leave smears should be replaced. You should also check spray nozzles for proper aim. If the nozzles are clogged, clean them with a needle.
  6. Teen life moves fast, but your car doesn’t have to.
Slow down and avoid speeding. It may seem fun to drive fast, or you may be running late to school, but the best way to keep your car well maintained and safe on the road is to avoid speeding. Speeding is not only dangerous, but it’s bad for your car too. Driving slower puts less demand on your car’s engine and transmission, and also helps to reduce the amount of gas you use in the process. Avoid all driving habits that put stress and strain on your vehicle.

Teen training is only the beginning of a lifetime of good safety habits. To get further information, AutoMD.com has made a Teen Drive Car Maintenance and Repair Guide available on its site where your teen can take a maintenance and repair quiz and sign a certificate of commitment with their parent or guardian.

Preparing the teenage driver to be aware of his or her car’s condition can prevent many a mishap from ever happening at all. And if you have teenage kids, you have enough to worry about without having to add a flat tire, broken down vehicle, or a car stranded on the road to the list.

Credit Rating Can Affect Car Insurance Rates

You may already know that car insurance companies use a long list of factors to determine how much each of us will pay for car insurance. Things they take into consideration include:

- age and sex of driver
- driver history
- make and model of the car we drive
- geographic location

What you may not know is that credit ratings are also factored in. This suggests that a poor credit rating could possibly have a negative effect on insurance rates. Indeed, that is exactly the case.

The Definition of “Credit Rating”

Before we talk about how your credit rating affects your car insurance rates it’s necessary to explain the credit rating process. In the United States a consumer credit rating is expressed in a number that can range anywhere from 300 to 800, depending on the baseline used.

That number is the result of a mathematical equation created by two engineers in the 1950s. They created the formula to see if they could predict if, and when, a consumer would default on his credit. Surprisingly, their formula turned out to be an incredibly accurate.

When this mathematical formula is applied to an individual, the resulting number is known as the “credit score.” That score tells a bank, store, or insurance company how likely you are to miss payments or fall permanently behind. Most notably, it predicts the likelihood that you will fall behind within the first six months of establishing credit.

Credit Rating Can Affect Car Insurance Rates

Credit Rating Can Affect Car Insurance Rates

Credit Rating and Car Insurance

Your credit score is important to an insurance company because they need to be confident you will make all of your payments on time and without question. They are depending on your payments as a means of helping support their cash position while also giving them some money to invest. If you have a low credit score your insurance company has reason to worry that you will miss a payment or two.

If you have a bad credit score (below 500 is considered bad) you’re likely to see higher car insurance rates. You can bring those rates down in the future by improving your credit score. As an added bonus, an improved credit score means your financial situation is healthier all the way around.

State Laws

By and large, state laws make it perfectly legal for insurance companies to consider your credit rating when determining your car insurance rates. But most of them make it illegal for an insurance company to refuse to cover your based only on your credit score. In other words, it can be a factor, but your credit score cannot be the sole determiner of your rates or whether or not you get a policy.

In addition, if you are rejected by an insurance company, state laws require that company to inform you in writing; they are required to include the reasons for rejecting you in their statement. If you see your credit score as being a factor, you know you need to work on improving that.
