Everything You Need to Know About Excluding People From Auto Insurance

Extremely toxic drivers, such as those convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, may make an exclusion a necessity.

Extremely toxic drivers, such as those convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, may make an exclusion a necessity. (image by seattlepi.com)

As one’s household grows, so too, does their auto insurance policy. While this is a pretty standard and expected occurrence, it’s important for people with an increasing number of licensed drivers under one roof to realize they have options. Should any of their family members threaten their driving reputation and quotes, policyholders have the option to remove and exclude them from their insurance plans, making auto coverage someone else’s problem and responsibility.

Requesting an Exclusion

If you’re a policyholder interested in excluding one or more individuals from your policy, then you need to contact your insurance company and/or agent. Your request will have to be in writing and might also come with additional forms and paperwork, depending on who your insurance company is. It’s also important to note that requesting an exclusion may cause your rates to increase a bit, but some view this cost as a much more affordable expense than the potential damages they might be held accountable for when the dangerous driver(s) in question get in a serious accident or have repeated traffic offenses.

Whom Should I Exclude?

Now that you know how to request an exclusion, it’s important to understand WHO to exclude. You should exclude anyone you see as high-risk, unreliable and irresponsible. Individuals who show no regard for rules and regulations and could care less what happens to your name and record in the process are other obvious options. To help make the choice easier for you, below is a list of three individuals you definitely don’t want on your policy.

Mittens, the Family Cat

While a fluffy, cute member of the family, Mittens also has a wild side with which you are all too familiar. She is open about her late-night romps with her neighborhood friends, often coming home as the sun rises. She’s practically nocturnal! Those crazy hours coupled with her sassy attitude are a recipe for disaster for you and your record, so nip this problem in the bud while you still can — before Mittens brings you down with her.

Your Six-year-old Who’s Going on Sixteen

Six-year-old Ben is your pride and joy. He’s cute and sweet, but let’s be honest — the boy is growing up too fast. Rather than run the risk of him growing up, stealing your car and running away, it’s probably best to exclude him from your policy to keep that from happening. You might not be able to stop him from physically growing, but you will darn sure try to stop him from leaving you!

The Neighbor Next Door Who Thinks He’s ALWAYS Welcome

Sure you let him borrow a cup a sugar once, but does that really warrant unannounced pop-ins or the dreaded ‘surprise I was waiting for you to get home from work’ visit? The answer is obviously no, but that doesn’t stop your too-close-for-comfort neighbor from doing just that and more. A sweet, eager individual with no concept of social norms, this neighbor is here so often you’re worried he thinks he’s actually a part of the family. While you technically shouldn’t have to cover him on your insurance, the lines that surround your whole relationship — and evidently your property— have been blurred. So, just to be on the safe side, you better exclude him. Who knows, maybe one day he’ll get really comfortable and decide to take your car for a spin and get locked up for grand theft auto — maybe then at least you’ll get to cook in peace again!

Reality Check

Obviously, these examples of potential exclusions are extreme and ridiculous, but that’s just the point. Auto insurance exclusions are a serious issue that should be treated as such. They shouldn’t be added to policies willy-nilly and on a whim, but rather after serious thought and consideration has been given to the situation. It can be a pricey and potentially lengthy process that should only be implemented after you have determined there is no other feasible option.

You should only opt to exclude drivers with repeated violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding or any other behavior that shows a disregard for the law. It’s also important to note that exclusions can also apply to non-related roommates. Depending on your policy and location, it might be a smart idea to exclude any irresponsible roommates you might have, should they try to drive your vehicle without permission and thus endanger your reputation and record.

We do hope you’re never presented with having to exclude a family member from your auto policy. Keep in mind, it’s only advisable when the said-driver is extremely toxic. Most of the time, excluding a single driver will only lead to higher rates for everyone involved.

You’ll know they are a real risk if they cause you to be subjected to higher rates, or worse, put you in danger of losing your coverage altogether — those are costly expenses worth the fees that come along with an exclusion.

If you are seriously considering opting for an exclusion, talk with your insurer to explore all of your options and alternatives. They should help point you in the right direction for your future.

Stewart Ford, who through Keydata created a £2.8bn financial empire selling ‘death bonds’, appealing against the fine by the City regulator

A financier has been hit with a record £75m fine after the collapse of his business left investors nursing losses of hundreds of millions of pounds.

The fine levied on Stewart Ford, founder of collapsed company Keydata, is nearly twenty times the previous highest fine against an individual, by the city regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority. The watchdog also fined the firm’s sales director £4m and the compliance officer a further £200,000 and banned the trio from working in financial services again.

Banks face bigger PPI mis-selling bill as regulator considers compensation rules

Financial Conduct Authority statement means more customers could be eligible for payout because of supreme court ruling on commissions

Banks could face a bigger bill for mis-selling payment protection insurance after the City regulator said it was considering new rules on how customers should be compensated.

The Financial Conduct Authority statement means more customers could be eligible for compensation because of a supreme court decision. The court ruled in November that if a PPI seller failed to disclose to a customer that it had received a large commission from the product provider, the sale was unfair under the 1974 Consumer Credit Act.

Do You Want To Pay Cheaper Premium On Your Van Insurance Policy?

Investing in vans or similar vehicles has resulted in many businesses doubling or even tripling their profits because of the role these vehicles play. A current and valid insurance policy is a must have for all vehicles including vans irrespective of their shape, sizes and purpose of use.

Getting the right insurance coverage for a van can become extremely expensive for businesses, especially those requiring fleet insurance for their numerous vans. Finding an inexpensive van insurance premium can most times become a daunting task if you do not know how and where to find it- below are great tips you can adopt when searching for low- cost van insurance premium for your business.

Irrespective of your situation, searching for a new van insurance policy for your new van or perhaps, wanting to renew your existing policy, doing a little research can save you time and money on the long run. In this day and age, the way we search for information has been greatly influenced by the advent of the internet, and so provide the best place to begin your search for the least expensive van insurance quotes.

The Internet is a Good Starting Point For Your Van Insurance Research

Going through scores of different van insurance quotes manually is the perfect way to waste your time and money. Over the last decade comparison websites have sprung up to help you compare insurance quotes fast and saving you money on your premiums, use them!. All you need to do: fill out a simple form with your correct details on the comparison website then get lots of quotes from different insurers within seconds.

Although not all offer that;s guaranteed to meet your particular budget expectation, you will discover that some insurers are in a much better position to offer your desired level of cover at an incredibly reduced premium. After picking your ideal quote, it pays to always consult the insurer to confirm a detail or two about your chosen policy before committing to the insurance quote on offer.

While the internet is an ideal starting point for uncovering that elusive low cost van insurance premium, you also need to be prepared to contact your insurer to see what deal is available. It’s an ideal opportunity for you to determine what is contained within the policy you’re buying and what is not in it. Upon providing your new or amended details to the insurer after the initial quote, they may now use the new information to revise their previous quote which could even become cheaper still.- http://www.cheapestvaninsurance.org/

Call Up Your New Insurers To Discuss The Policy

Insurance for van is a little more of a specialist type of cover than car or even home insurance. Unfortunately, not all insurers can provide cover, in particular competitive premiums. Many a times, we avoid trying newer things instead, we stick with what we’ve been accustomed to, like getting quotes from the same insurer we’ve been with for ages . However, if you’re serious about reducing your premium you must to go the extra mile.

No matter how contented you may be with your current premium or insurer, it still pays to shop around to get even better bargain. Irrespective of the manner you search for a cheaper deal, using van insurance comparison sites or approaching individual insurers directly or through their websites, discovering discount quotes can be pretty straight forward.

If you are able to source a cheaper quote you can use that information to approach your current insurers (or indeed any others that you’re interested in) and discuss their competitor’s sites. These insurers are under no pressure to change their quotation, some might not even consider changing it, it simply establishes a medium of at least communication with the added chance of reducing your premium even further without amending your policy.

Confirming Your Policy

At this critical stage before your policy acceptance, you will be in a better position to figure out what’s best to retain or discard with your policy in order to keep your premium at a low. Typically, insurers would like to cross sell you on other insurance packages like legal expenses cover, personal injury cover, European cover and lots more. But, there isn’t any point buying any of these package when you really do not need them.

A policy thoroughly examined to strip of any unwanted extras and left with only the primary cover and protection needed. Don’t go increasing your level of excess by an insane amount, just make sure you aren’t paying for unwanted add- on. Getting rid of all the unwanted optional extras from your policy will help you save loads.

The bottom line though is when it comes to reducing van insurance premium you’ll need to be prepared to do some work. Whether that’s researching alternative providers online or phoning your current insurer to see if they can remove any unnecessary baggage, there are plenty of options to help you get the right result.

Dartford crossing toll booths to be replaced

Motorists using the Dartford Crossing will be forced to pay online, over the phone or in registered retailers from 30 November with payment booths ousted.

Work will begin to remove the payment booths two days before the introduction of the scheme that will use similar technology to the London Congestion Charge system.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will police the system, monitoring and recording vehicles to see whether or not the new £2.50 charge has been paid.

The cost for using the Dartford crossing has risen by 50p and riders will be penalised if they do not pay the revised fee.

According to the Highways Agency, those who do not pay the fee before midnight of the following day run the risk of a maximum fine of £105 after 28 days.

The system will be in place in both directions, including the Queen Elizabeth bridge and the tunnels taking traffic north, however the crossing will remain free to use between 10pm and 6am.

The wholesale changes have been introduced to combat persistent congestion and delays at the tollbooths, which has plagued the Dartford Crossing since it was opened in 1963.

Around 170,000 vehicles use the crossing each day, adding up to 50 million vehicles per annum.

And the new Dart Charge system is part of a large-scale attempt to improve the crossing and traffic on it and the surrounding roads.

However delays are expected to continue whilst comprehensive improvements are made to the road system, including cutting 27 lanes of traffic to just four in each direction.

Road works are expected to be on going until Spring 2015 with temporary speed limits and layouts in place until then.

Fantastic turnout for Commercial Vehicle Show 2012

Crowds numbered over 16000 at this year’s CV Show, up by 10% on last year’s figures and an impressive feat given the current state of our economic climate, especially as many of those in attendance were buyers.

Show organisers were more than happy with such a fantastic turnout and just what the CV Show 2012 has proved about the commercial vehicle market- it remains sufficiently healthy despite the decline of other industries in the UK, defying economic uncertainty.

These figures also bode well for 2013, when the Commercial Vehicle will also be able to boast official international accreditation. All this seems to promise an even bigger and even better show for next year.

Direction For Finding Lowered Van Insurance Rates Nationwide

Van insurance policies comes with different types of insurance policies for their drivers, although price of these kinds of coverage rely upon the exact type of insurance policy picked, it could some times rely upon the most important goal of the utilization of the van (irrespective of whether business or non commercialized use).

1.
Regardless of how pricey a van insurance cover might be, your legal duty will be to at least get the most primary policy or protection against any uncertainty.Typically, all vans will require fire as well as theft policy besides public liability cover. But business vans also need 3rd party protection along with other policy which cover the van but do not identify anyone driver. On the other hand, particular personnel may be designated for eligibility of discounted price.

2.
It is extremely very easy to add new add-ons to comprehensive insurance policies. A few of these add-ons may include additional protective cover for legal expenses coverage, fixture cover, breakdown protection as well as audio coverage. It's perfect in circumstances whereby saving money on policies has to be your uttermost purpose. If you do not drive numerous miles, mileage rate reductions can decrease your payment and experience levels can help save you cash on insurance policy.

3.

Third-party cover meant we couldn’t get our Rangemaster cooker repaired

A repair was attempted by HomeServe, but the cooker remains broken

Encouraged by your column’s coverage of a faulty Ikea kitchen, I write as a peeved and frustrated owner of an induction hob that has failed completely and had repairs that fall way short in efficiency.

We have a Rangemaster cooker with five induction plates – all of which suddenly stopped working in mid-January, two months after the manufacturer’s warranty ran out. However, we had taken an extended warranty with HomeServe, which sent repairers from a partner company.

When to Settle a Car Accident Without an Insurer

By Aaron Crowe

One of the first inclinations after being in a car accident is to call your auto insurance company. After making sure everyone is safe and you’ve contacted the other driver, calling your insurer for help can be one of the first things you want to do.

That can often be a smart move. Insurance agents are there to help you through the insurance process and want to make sure that your car and any injuries you have from the accident are taken care of quickly.

There are some times after an auto accident, however, when there really isn’t a need to contact your insurer. Filing an insurance claim could lead to a rate increase somewhere down the road.

Going it alone without insurance isn’t right in every circumstance. You should at least exchange insurance information at the accident scene with the other driver, just in case you need to contact them later or decide to file a claim anyway.

Here are some times when it’s worth considering not contacting your insurer:

1. You’re in a minor accident.

If no one is injured and both cars have minor damage, or if it’s only your car that was damaged — such as from backing out of a parking space — then a claim might not have to be filed.

A minor accident in a parking lot where you barely hit another car, for example, could be the right time not to file a claim. But only if the other person doesn’t dispute it and you can pay for the damage yourself, says Spencer Ruyle, a State Farm agent in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Get an estimate from a mechanic for the cost of repairs, and if it’s more than the amount you can afford to pay, then you may want to call your insurer.

A simple rule of thumb to remember after getting an estimate is if the cost is greater than your deductible, you may want to consider using your insurance to pay for it, Ruyle says.

2. You don’t have questions for your agent.

If the accident doesn’t lead you to any questions that you’d have to call your insurance agent to get answers to, then you might be OK by dealing with it yourself.

Remember to not mention this accident to your insurance agent because from an insurer’s perspective, “we should be filing a claim immediately” and are obligated by contract to do so, Ruyle says.

It can lead to a slippery slope if you call for advice because you’re upset after the accident and want answers quickly, he says.

“I’m supposed to file a claim if I hear from them,” and not just give advice, Ruyle says.

3. You’re at fault and have filed a few claims lately.

Avoiding a rate hike is a major reason not to report an accident, especially if you’re at fault and you’ve filed some insurance claims in the last few years.

Having an at-fault accident on your record could lead to higher rates after the next accident, even if it’s minor. Paying to repair that minor damage out of your own pocket could be cheaper than going through your insurance company.

“The more claims you have, the more likely you are for some adverse actions to be taken,” Ruyle says.

If the accident isn’t your fault, you won’t benefit by settling the claim privately. Your rates won’t rise if you make a claim, either through your own insurance or the other driver’s liability coverage.

4. You know the victim.

If you hit a relative’s car or somehow know the other person involved in the accident, it’s a lot easier to settle who pays for the damage than if it’s a stranger. If your cousin is responsible, you’re more likely to accept a private deal than you would with someone you don’t know.

The same goes if you’re at fault. It’s easier to deal with payment privately if you know your friend won’t take advantage of you by asking you to pay for damage that happened previously.

If you get in an accident with a stranger who you somehow find trustworthy, you should still gather their personal and insurance information in case you decide to file a claim later. An insurance claim can be filed within one year of an accident, Ruyle says.

When to file a claim

On the other side of the insurance claim issue, there are times when it’s definitely worthwhile to call your insurance agent and file a claim. Here are four:

1. Major damage.

If either car suffers major damage, it’s an obvious sign to contact your insurer, whether or not you’re at fault. Repairs will likely be expensive, and even if the at-fault driver promises to pay for them out of pocket, you’ll be safer with the assurance of your insurer that you’re covered and they’ll represent you.

If your car is totaled, your insurer can help solve issues that are too complicated for you to deal with alone, such as determining the value of the car.

2. Someone is injured.

Whether it’s you, your passengers, someone in the other car or bystanders, you’re better off calling your insurance company if anyone is injured in a car accident you’re in.

Without it, you risk being sued, not getting all of your medical bills paid, paying for treatment for fake injuries, and other potential hassles.

3. Fault is disputed.

If there is any dispute over who is at fault in the accident, then file an insurance claim, Ruyle recommends. Your insurer will represent you and help determine who was at fault.

“The quicker that you file the claim, the quicker we can be on top of it and the sooner you can be taken care of,” he says.

4. The other driver offers cash or is adamant that you go to their mechanic.

If an at-fault driver throws down cash at an accident scene to pay for your damaged car, it’s probably not a good idea to take it. It’s too early to know the extent of the damages, to yourself or your car, and it can be a clear sign that the other driver doesn’t want their insurance company called.

The same goes if he offers to fix the car himself or insists you take your car to his mechanic. Each driver should choose their own repair shop, or better yet, have their insurance company recommend a mechanic.

What supermarkets don’t want you to know

Discover the tricks supermarkets use to encourage you to spend more on your weekly shop.

Do you always seem to come away from the supermarket with a couple of items that weren’t on your shopping list or having spent more than you had intended when you walked into the store?

This probably isn’t an accident and, in fact, you may be doing exactly what the retailer expects of its customers.

With this in mind, we reveal five of the most common supermarket tricks.

Changing layouts

As well as being inconvenient for regular customers, changing the layout of a store is a ploy to encourage shoppers to spend more time searching for their items and probably spending more money.

While you’re traipsing through the aisles looking for a carton of semi-skimmed, you might be tempted to pick up a six-pack of your favourite lager.

Dynamic pricing

You might logically assume that supermarket chains have one price for every item that is applied across all of its stores. Unfortunately not…

Most supermarkets follow a practice known as ‘dynamic pricing’ in which they set prices according to regional trends. This means you’ll probably pay a higher price for your groceries if you live in a wealthy area than you would in other parts of the country.

The eyeline trick

Retailers often place their more expensive, branded items at customers’ eye level, while placing less costly alternatives on top and bottom shelves.

In order to boost their profits, supermarkets spend millions of pounds analysing shoppers’ behaviour and psychology. Based on this research, they know we’re much more likely to opt for items right in front of us than scour the shelves for a cheaper deal.

Dodgy price drops

Imagine you’re in a supermarket and see that an item that had been £6 has been reduced to £4.99. Clearly this is a bargain, right? Not necessarily.

Supermarkets often temporarily inflate the price of goods before putting them on ‘sale’. This way, they can advertise the new price against the previous, inflated price to give the appearance of an attractive saving.

This practice is perfectly legal. As long as the supermarket has charged the higher price for at least 28 days prior to the sale, retailers can market this as a price cut.

Does size matter?

Supermarkets are fond of telling us we’ll get better value if we buy our food in larger portions. You might therefore assume that a 1kg tub of butter will offer better value overall than a 500-gram tub.

However, it may work out cheaper to buy two smaller packs. In order to form an accurate comparison and find the most competitive deal, it’s worth comparing the price per 100 grams.

Five Safe and Affordable Cars for Teens

Top 5 Safest and Affordable Cars for Teens

Experts agree that a teen driver should drive the safest, most reliable, and newest vehicle if at all possible. So does this mean that when it comes to your teen’s safety, less expensive or used vehicles are out of the question? No, but not surprisingly, you will need to do some research in order to find a budget-friendly vehicle with all or most of the now Federally-required safety features found in new vehicles.

Some important things to consider when purchasing a car for a teen driver include:

  • Midsize cars are big enough to protect the driver and passengers in the event of a crash, but small enough for teen drivers to handle easily.
  • A four-cylinder engine, as opposed to a V6 engine, has limited acceleration capabilities, making it far less likely for your teen to drive beyond the speed limit.
  • Older, used cars may not have the latest safety features Federal law requires of all new vehicles. However, many can come close. Highly recommended safety features include front and side air bags, an antilock braking system (ABS), automatic transmission, electronic stability control (ESC), and daytime running lights.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducts crash tests on new vehicles and reports their performance on its safercar.gov website. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducts its own testing program and issues safety ratings as well. Both are good resources to check when shopping for a car for your teen.

The five cars listed below are recommended by either Consumer Reports or Edmonds for their affordability and safety features particularly suited to teen drivers. Upon further research, you may find an even lower-priced vehicle, so consider the list below a place to begin shopping for your teen.

  1. 2005 Saab 9-3 Linear: The mid-sized, relatively inexpensive 2005 Saab 9-3 features plenty of passenger room and trunk space. Safety features include stability control and front and side airbags. Teenagers might not be thrilled with its unexciting interior and weak sound system, but may come to appreciate that this is a car designed to keep its driver and passengers safe.
  2. 2009 Honda Accord Sedan: All Accords come with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, and front and side airbags. The 2009 Honda Accord sedan received five starts in government crash tests and currently has one of the highest resale values around.
  3. 2010 Chevrolet Malibu: Yep, you guessed it, it’s another sedan (do you sense a pattern here?). The fuel-efficient 2010 Chevrolet boasts high crash test scores, including a perfect five stars in all government frontal and side crash categories. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front and side airbags, and the OnStar emergency communications system.
  4. 2008 Saturn Aura XE: The attractively-designed and budget-friendly 2008 Saturn Aura includes stability control for all V6 models. Additional safety features include antilock disc brakes, front and side airbags, traction control, and the OnStar emergency communications system.
  5. 2013 Chevrolet Malibu: Newest and priciest on our list of safe, budget-friendly cars for teens, the fully redesigned 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is a stylish, mid-sized sedan with a full complement of standard safety features. Rear side airbags will be standard on all Malibus beginning in the summer of 2013. Interestingly, the 2013 Chevy Malibu was worked on by a team of engineers who also happened to be moms!

The best and worst PIN numbers

Do you have one of the most predictable PIN numbers in the world? If so, your cash could be at risk.

I’m going to try to guess your PIN number… is it 1234? According to new research, there is a pretty good chance I’m right. If I were a criminal who had stolen your card, I could be emptying your account right now.

Shockingly, research by technology consultancy Data Genetics has found that almost 11% of the population chooses this number – with 1111 and 0000 being the second and third most popular options.

Not surprisingly, fraudsters have a pretty easy time cracking such predictable codes and the data reveals that it is possible to guess 10% of PINs in just one attempt.

In contrast, the random (and far less memorable) collection of numbers 8068 is the least common PIN – though there’s a pretty good chance that will change now this research has been published.

In order to conduct the research, Data Genetics looked at the details of 3.4 million four-digit passwords that have been leaked via security breaches.

Although these codes are computer passwords, the study assumes that most people will use a similar set of numbers for their PINs.

Here are the 10 most common choices according to the data:

1. 1234

2. 1111

3. 0000

4. 1212

5. 7777

6. 1004

7. 2000

8. 4444

9. 2222

10. 6969

Source: Data Genetics

The least common PINs

Of course, not every PIN is so easy to guess. If there is no obvious pattern, it stands to reason that it will be more difficult to guess.

Here are the 10 least common:

1. 8068

2. 8093

3. 9629

4. 6835

5. 7637

6. 0738

7. 8398

8. 6793

9. 9480

10. 8957

Source: Data Genetics

How we choose our PIN

Many people appear to opt for significant dates such as birthdays and anniversaries as codes beginning with the numbers 19 feature highly in the list.

Fans of George Orwell don’t appear overly concerned that Big Brother will guess their PIN – 1984 is the 26th most common choice. Likewise, fans of James Bond could possibly be using their PIN as a way to pay homage to their hero as 0007 is the 23rd most popular choice.

Keeping your PIN safe

Fortunately there are a number of things you can do to keep your PIN safe.

Avoid the obvious:

As well as the codes mentioned on the list above, stay clear of having your date of birth, your children’s birthdays or a wedding anniversary.

In fact, try to keep it random – even the most scatterbrained individual can probably remember four numbers.

Keep it secret

Although you might be tempted to share your PIN with friends or family, this could leave you thousands of pounds out of pocket. If you were the victim of fraud and your bank discovered you had shared your PIN details, it might refuse to refund your money.

Take care at the cash machine

In order to steal PIN details, fraudsters place hidden devices and cameras in ATMs. Although these can be almost impossible to detect, it’s wise to avoid any cash point that appears to have been damaged or vandalised.

Remember, a bank will never ask for details of your PIN number over the phone. If someone calls claiming to be from your bank and asks for this information, you’re probably speaking to a fraudster.
