The UK’s top earners revealed

Do you ever feel like you have very little to show for an hour's work? Well, these people may feel differently.

If you’re anything like us, you’d probably be pretty pleased to discover you were earning as much as David Cameron.

According to research from employment website People Per Hour, the Prime Minister picks up £80.24 per hour – not bad for 60 minute’s graft.

However, this amount would probably seem pretty meagre if you were earning the same as a Hollywood actor, supermodel or sporting star.

In fact, some of the most well-paid Hollywood stars receive the equivalent of more than £10,000 per hour.

In order to calculate hourly rates of pay for certain people and professions, the researchers first looked at the annual salary. They then broke the figure down assuming 48 working weeks – each of 37 hours – to arrive at an equivalent hourly rate.

The top earners revealed

Harry Potter fans might not be surprised to learn that JK Rowling picks up a massive £6,144.32 per hour.

In the sporting industry, tennis star Andy Murray receives £4,338.10 and the average Premier League footballer pockets £822.07 an hour.

Across the pond, Hollywood actor Johnny Depp picks up the equivalent of £10,841 every 60 minutes, while UK supermodel Kate Moss bags £3,326.45.

Remember, these figures are calculated on the basis of a typical working week and many of the people in this list might not work on a nine to five basis. This means they’re unlikely to receive a set hourly rate like the rest of us.

The 1,508% salary hike

People Per Hour isn’t the only organisation to have conducted research into levels of pay.

According to the High Pay Centre, top footballers saw their salaries increase by a massive 1,508% between 1992 and 2010 – compared with the average salary increase of 186% during this period.

In fact, footballers’ salaries now account for up to 70% of clubs’ turnover and the price of match tickets for fans has risen by up to 1,000%.

Best- and worst-paying professions

Of course, the average Brit will never earn an hourly rate anywhere near those of the rich and famous.

You might therefore be more interested in People Per Hour’s findings related to the average incomes for professions across the UK.

Amongst the more highly paid are directors and chief executives of major companies who make £63.15 an hour and army colonels who can earn as much as £50.34. Meanwhile, airline pilots and GPs pocket around £40 for one hour’s work.

At the lower end of the spectrum, waiters receive just £3.17 per hour and secretaries pocket £3.73. Those who work as receptionists earn £6.50 per hour and cooks pick up £7.97 per year.

Although you might be horrified to think of these people as earning below the minimum wage, remember some of these low earners probably work part time. This means their pay might not be quite as meager as it seems – though still nowhere near the sums made by Hollywood stars and Premier League footballers.
