How Sports Car Lovers Can Go Green

Just because you enjoy the power and sleek design of sports cars doesn’t mean that you can’t do your part for the environment. A green lifestyle and love for sports cars can actually go hand in hand. Whether it means adjusting some of your habits or investing in some incredible green technology, here are some ways you can keep your affinity for fast cars as eco-friendly as possible.

  1. Drive a non-sports car during the week:

What good is your horsepower doing in rush-hour traffic? You’re stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic daily and if you’re driving your sports car everywhere, you’re probably using more gas than you need to. If possible, keep your sports car at home during the week and take another car (or even carpool!) to work and on errands. Choose a car with great gas mileage for those frustrating commutes and break your sports car out on the weekends when you can speed around your favorite roads.

  2. Keep your engine clean and tuned up:

Keeping your engine running smoothly not only improves the performance of your car, but can give you better gas mileage. Depending on the repairs or maintenance, you can improve your mileage anywhere from 4% to 40%. This just gives you another excuse to pop the hood of one of your prized possessions.

  3. Use green products:

Whether you’re changing out the spark plugs or just giving your car her weekly bath and wax, try to find the greenest products for these tasks. Some products make your car itself more eco-friendly (locking fuel caps that keep gas from evaporating, sun shades, etc.), while others, like cleaning products, are themselves green alternatives that get the job done with less ill effects on the environment. No matter what kind of sports car you have, there are options out there to make it and its care more eco-friendly.

  4. Choose a sporty electric or hybrid car:

If you’ve got the spending money, one of the best ways to go green (and turn some heads along the way) is to purchase one of the sporty electric cars that’s either on the market now or will be soon. Your options for these kind of cars are quickly increasing, so you can choose the one that fits your need for speed the best. Try the Audi R8 e-tron or Tesla Roadster for an all-electric ride or the Fisker Atlantic if you’re looking for a hybrid.

  5. Go green in other areas of your life:

If you’ve got a gas-guzzling sports car that you can’t bear to part with, make up for it by making the rest of your life as green as possible. Use green products, conserve electricity and water, and reuse cups and bags. Go paperless, sort your recycling, and buy local. A green lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to drive a slow, electric car. It means making changes where you can and reducing your carbon footprint in everyday life.
