The Best And Worst Songs To Drive To
By Aaron Crowe
Nothing gets your heart pumping like a good song. The lyrics to a Bruce Springsteen song or the pop song of the month might stay in your head all day, but the joy of listening to a fun song in the car can be expressed while you’re driving.
That could be good — making a long drive more enjoyable — or it could give you a lead foot and a speeding ticket.
Researchers in the United Kingdom found that certain songs, and certain types of songs, resulted in more accidents, and others gave drivers more concentration to be focused on the road.
The survey points out that the “golden oldies” were the most popular driving songs, and that types of music thought to have a relaxing effect on the listener didn’t lead to a more tempered driving style.
Blues fans were found to be the most likely to be caught speeding, followed by listeners to country, reggae, rap and hip hop, classical, and easy listening music.
Country music listeners were most likely to have an accident, followed by classical, easy listening, reggae, blues, and rock and pop.
Drivers who listened to talk-radio or nothing were found to be more focused on the road, with only 22% admitted to having a minor accident, compared to 78% of drivers who listen to music.
Everyone has their favorite songs to drive to, and what may lead to speeding for one person may calm another to drive slowly.
Former traffic school teacher Walter Meyer remembers hearing often the excuse from young drivers that “this really great song came on the radio and I sort of lost track of things and suddenly I was speeding,” Meyer wrote in an email.
But one of his elderly students had an interesting excuse: “It wasn’t my fault, it was Glenn Miller’s.” The song “American Patrol” came on the radio, and having grown up a Big Band fan, she couldn’t resist driving fast to the peppy song.
Meyer’s advice to his students who insisted on driving when drowsy was to avoid familiar music or music they liked that could easily lull them to sleep. He suggested listening to music they don’t know — such as rap or country — to keep them more alert and not allow them to get lost in a song they don’t know.
Music tastes are subjective, but we wanted to offer our own suggestions — with some help from music fans — for the best and worst songs to drive to. We don’t have any proof that they’ll lead to fewer accidents or speeding tickets, but they’re worth considering to either keep in the car turn them off if they come on the radio.
10 best songs to drive to
1. “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen. The entire album is great, and all of the songs are great to drive to, but “Born to Run” is fun to sing to and drive fast. Just don’t get caught.
2. “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Clash. Yes, go, but don’t drive too fast.
3. “Radar Love” by Golden Earring. Suggested by Ann Marie van den Hurk, a public relations executive, this song has a beat that catches you from the start and may give you a reason to look out for radar detectors.
4. “Beat It” by Michael Jackson. Music blog writer Fred Goodall surveyed his readers and found that this upbeat song was their favorite.
5. “Just What I Needed” by The Cars. Another song that’s easy to sing to. Jennifer Vanderslice, who suggested this song, remembers driving when she was 17 to this hit song and getting a heavy foot. She drove too fast around a curve and had to swerve to avoid hitting a car, but the rear of her car slammed into a mud hill on the other side of the road. A good memory, though her accident is a reminder to not hit the gas when a good song comes on the radio.
6. “Pump It Up” by Elvis Costello. It has nothing to do with pumping gas, but this peppy song puts Jennifer Towner, who suggested it, in a good mood while driving.
7. “25 Miles” by Edwin Starr. It’s a song about a man walking 25 miles to see his lady, but it’s still a good song about being on the road and watching the miles tick away, says fan April Whitney, an entertainment publicist at Chronicle Books.
8. “Wheel In The Sky” by Journey. Any of this band’s greatest hits are good to drive to if they’re upbeat with rolling beats, suggests John Noland, who sells car accessories.
9. “Girls Lie Too” by Terri Clark. Many country songs are good to sing to, but this one hits the spot.
10. “Movin’ Right Along,” sung by Kermit and Fozzie. This song from the first Muppet movie, as suggested by Dave Waldman, is a fun one to get the kids singing along during a road trip.
10 worst songs to drive to
1. “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC. Another song suggested by Goodall in his informal survey of readers. The reasons should be self-explanatory.
2. “I Can’t Drive 55” by Sammy Haggar. Another self-explanatory song that could lead to driving too fast and may not help your case if a police officer pulls you over for speeding.
3. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard. The song is popular in strip clubs, but it’s not safe in the car “due to the extreme urge to throw your hair all over the place any gyrate,” says Sharon Rosenblatt. Lesson: Don’t headbang in a car.
4. “Summer In The City” by The Lovin’ Spoonful. It’s a great song, says Steve Silberberg, but any song with car horns blowing or ambulance noises is bad because drivers can mistake it for the real thing.
5. “Bat Out Of Hell” by Meat Loaf. This was the top song in the UK study cited above that led to blues music listeners to get speeding tickets.
6. “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf. It’s a great song, no doubt, but it’s so good and catchy that it could lead to fast driving and accidents.
7. “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen. An excellent song but a title you don’t want to explain to an officer if you’re stopped for speeding.
8. “Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.” Classical music was cited in the UK survey as leading to minor accidents. Could it be because fans were cranking the sound so hard and driving so fast to this song that they weren’t paying attention to the road?
9. “One Piece at a Time” by Johnny Cash. You can’t beat Johnny Cash for great country music. But remember that in the UK study, country music was high in leading to accidents and speeding. This song is about a man who stole a car one piece at a time from the GM plant he worked at. Be careful not to let your singing along lead to carelessness.
10. “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz. A strong beat that may be a little too strong for potential speeders.
That’s our list. What’s yours?

Sitting Your Kids Below The Ages Of 2 Within A Rear Facing Position Is Notably Less compromising In comparison with Any Other Sitting Position Claims The United states School For Pediatrics
Enclosed inside a new policy released in the issue of April 2011 of Pediatric medicine, fathers and mothers are advised to keep their children within a rear-facing infant car seat up till the age of two or better still when they have gotten to the required height and also body weight for their specified seat. Also, the AAP also reminded parents about the basic requirement for their children to use booster seats that seat belt positioned until the height of 4' and 9" in height as well as reaching the ages of 8-12 years of age.
A previous policy published in 2002 also advised that it is much safer for toddlers and infants to be placed in a rear facing up position up to the limits of the car seat, also indicating age 12 months and 20 pounds as absolute minimum. Noticeably, a huge percentage of parents were observed changing their child's car seat position to a front facing one from rear-faced position upon their babies turning one.
"Transition from one stage to another often gets parents excited, but these transitions must generally be delayed until they are absolutely necessary, as the child fully develop and outgrows the restrictions for his or her present stage," said Dennis Dubin, MD, FAAP, leader and author of the policy statement as well as the accompanying technical report.
"A rear-facing child safety seat does a better job of supporting the head, neck and spine of infants and toddlers in a crash, because it distributes the force of the collision over the entire body," dr durbin said. "with larger kids, a harness fitted forward facing seat is a lot safer than booster seats, and a belt positioning booster seat gives the most protection possible than just a seat belt alone until the seat belt can work correctly."
While the rate of deaths in motor vehicle crashes in children under age 16 has decreased substantially, dropping 45 percent between 1997 and 2009, it is still the leading cause of death for children ages 4 and older. Totalling children and teenagers up to the ages of 21 years, over 5,000 deaths are recorded each year. The amount of casualties can be alarming: for every fatality, approximately 18 children get admitted in hospital while more than four hundred are seriously injured enough to need medical assistance.
Results from research made have uncovered the truth that kids are safer in rear-facing car seats. The 2007 journal injury prevention study unveiled that children within the ages of 2 yr were 75% less likely to be killed or obtain very severe injuries in the event of a crash if they are sat in a rear facing manner.
The age 2 recommendation is not a deadline, but rather a guideline to help parents decide when to make the transition, Dr. Durbin said. Smaller children will benefit from remaining rear-facing longer, while other children may reach the maximum height or weight before 2 years of age.
Children must be transitioned from a rear facing car seat to a forward facing car seat that comes with harness for optimal safety, this should continue until they reach the required height and weight. Then a booster will make sure the vehicle's lap-and-shoulder belt fit properly. The correct positioning of the seat belt should be for it to lie across in between the shoulder and the chest rather than laying across the face or the neck- as this can be dangerous in the event of an accident .
While the lap belt on the other hand must fit low and snug on the upper thighs and hips instead of the belly. A number kids will most definitely require a booster seat until they've grown till four feet and nine inches tall as well as being 8 to 12 years of age.
Children should ride in a http://www.primoeurobath.com/booster-seat.html or an http://www.primoeurobath.com/infant-car-seat.html in the rear of a vehicle until they are 13 years old.
An appropriate age and size restraints are still needed for children under the ages of 2 years to ride on the laps of an adult even though the Federal Aviation Authority permits kids to ride on adult's laps.
Just to recap, whatsoever method of transportation, children must be secured or restrained adequately to avoid severe injuries should an accident occur, whether by air, sea or land kids should always be retrained properly, Dr Durbin said. http://www.primoeurobath.com/, http://www.primoeurobath.com/baby-strollers.html, http://www.primoeurobath.com/baby-monitor.html and safe http://www.primoeurobath.com/baby-swings.html are a few of the most valuable baby products recommended for kids safety in their everyday life.

What is a Diminished Value Claim?
The information age has brought about an interesting quandary in the area of selling used vehicles previously damaged in an accident. Things like Carfax are now making it possible to track a vehicle’s repair history, making it easier for potential new owners to know what’s under the hood and body before they make a purchase. While this may be good from the standpoint of consumer protection, it’s bad in terms of the resale value of used vehicles.
To understand this principle, just ask yourself a question. If you we’re looking at a 2006 minivan that had sustained front-end damage in a crash, would you be more likely to forgo that vehicle in favor of another one of similar make and model for a similar price? If you’re like most of us you certainly would. The perception of diminished value goes hand-in-hand with cars that have been damaged and accidents — even when the vehicle is repaired to serviceable condition.
In the insurance world the principle of diminished value is a sticky one. Insurance companies obviously don’t want to pay out more in claims than they need to; at the same time they know offering the cheapest car insurance available is not necessarily going to be enough to keep customers happy after accident claims. There needs to be a balancing of profit and customer satisfaction. Diminished value makes achieving that balance a bit more difficult.
Pursuing a Diminished Value Claim
Unless you’re car insurance policy specifically prohibits diminished value claims you do have the right to pursue one with your insurance company. That doesn’t mean they have to honor your claim, but at least you have a shot at it. Depending on how large the difference is between the value of your repaired car and the Blue Book value of your make and model in general, it might even be worth it to hire an attorney. But the difference would have to be at least several thousand dollars to make it worth your while.
To give an example, let’s say an accident caused $5,000 damage to your three-year-old Dodge Durango. Because the Blue Book value of the car is still well over $10,000 your insurance company chooses to repair your vehicle. But then suppose the service writer at your repair garage informs you the truck will lose about $3,000 worth of value simply because it was involved in a crash. If your car insurance company only pays the $5,000 repair bill you have essentially taken a loss because the value of your Durango is now less.
This is a case where you might consider a diminished value claim to recover that $3,000. Whether or not you’re successful depends on your circumstances; circumstances that include the type of policy you have, the insurance company you purchased it from, and how well you can make your case. Rest assured that if you purchased a cheap car insurance policy from a discount broker you’re going to have more trouble with a diminished value claim than you would with a more reputable company.
History on Your Side
No matter how little you paid for affordable car insurance, you do have history on your side when it comes to diminished value claims. Owners of classic cars have been successfully filing such claims for decades. If you study up on the subject, read some articles from industry lawyers, and maybe pick the brains of others who have filed such claims, you can be successful in recovering diminished value in some cases. You can also file a complaint with your state insurance department or seek the services of a certified mediator.

The Rationale behind Car Insurance
It’s probably safe to say that no one reading this article remembers a day when car insurance was not available. If you’re a senior, you may remember a time when it was not mandatory in your state, but the earliest forms of car insurance go back to the late 1800s. It has been a part of all of our lives to one extent or another.
The first car insurance policy on record was written in 1889 to cover the liability of a man named Truman Martin. Mr. Martin owned an early steam powered automobile which, while it was a great invention, was a source of worry in that it could damage property or injure people.
If you want to know the rationale behind mandatory car insurance, that’s it.
Car insurance is a necessity in order to protect us from the carelessness of other people who might cause injury or property damage. If insurance was not mandatory too many people would be at risk of financial devastation after an accident.
How Car Insurance Evolved
The first policies written in the 1800s were pretty much an experiment, given the fact that underwriters really had no idea how much damage a car could cause. Furthermore, so few people had automobiles that accidents between multiple drivers were unheard of. Those early liability policies were more focused on the possibility of damaging buildings, road signs, and pitching posts.
By 1925 there were enough cars in the road to significantly increase the likelihood of multi-vehicle accidents. That forced the insurance industry to reassess cover drivers and effectively deal with the question of personal injuries. That transition paved the way for what is today’s modern car insurance product.
A Policy for Everyone
Whether or not you agree with the compulsory insurance laws in your state, it can’t be denied that healthy competition among car insurance companies has resulted in a wide range of policies and options. As such, there is a policy out there for just about every driver and every need. That’s a far cry from the “one size fits all” policies of the 1920s.
You and I can shop for the cheapest car insurance possible, purchase a comprehensive policy that will cover everything under the sun, or settle on something in between. We can choose between liability limits, different deductibles, and whether or not we want to add items from a long menu of options. In other words, we have enough options to make car insurance accessible and affordable for everyone.
Next time you’re shopping for a new insurance policy remember the rationale behind it. That may not make things any more pleasant in terms of the shopping experience itself, but understanding why car insurance is necessary may take some of the edge off. And, though we sincerely hope it never happens, you’ll get a full appreciation of the rationale behind car insurance if there ever comes a time when you need to make a claim against someone else’s liability policy.

Seven credit rating myths
Don’t be fooled by common misconceptions about your credit rating.
We’re constantly told about the benefits of checking our credit report. It could help us spot identity theft, correct mistakes on our file, assess our chances of getting a mortgage – to name but a few.
While these points are all true, there are a number of myths and misconceptions. We explain the truth behind seven of the most common.
MYTH ONE: Checking your own credit report damages your score
FACT: Your credit score will only be affected if your file is checked by a potential lender.
If your file is frequently checked by credit card companies, this could mean you are having financial difficulties.
MYTH TWO: I’m on a credit card blacklist
FACT: There is no industry wide ‘naughty list’ of people who can’t borrow money or get a credit card.
Most companies will look at similar criteria when assessing your application. However, they have different rules when deciding whether or not to lend you money. Being rejected by one company doesn’t automatically mean you will be declined every time you apply for credit.
MYTH THREE: My flatmates’ debt will lower my score
FACT: Unless you have financial ties with somebody (i.e. a joint account), this person cannot affect your own credit history – even if you live together.
Don’t stress if your housemate has racked up thousands on store cards, that’s his or her problem.
MYTH FOUR: Being a high earner means a high score
FACT: Although you may be asked your salary details when applying for a credit card or loan, your earnings do not affect your score.
However much you make, your score may be low if you have a history of debt and financial mismanagement.
MYTH FIVE: A criminal record affects my rating
FACT: Past offenses will not appear on your credit file – unless the crime was of a financial nature.
Your file will note if you have been declared bankrupt or have a county court judgement (CCJ). However, potential lenders will not be able to see if you have had any parking or driving fines.
MYTH SIX: Bad credit stays with you for life
FACT: The good news is that bad credit does have a shelf life.
While a bankruptcy is recorded for six years, it may only take a few months to clean up your report if your offenses are relatively minor (such as not being on the electoral roll).
MYTH SEVEN: You can be fired for bad credit
FACT: Although an employer may ask to check your credit report for proof of financial stability, the company will need your consent to do so.
If you are worried that your credit rating could affect your job, you might want to check the terms of your employment contract or seek professional debt advice.

Illinois Financial Responsiblity (SR-22) Insurance
Financial Responsibility Insurance (SR-22) monitors the insurance of problem drivers and authorizes the Secretary of State’s office to suspend upon cancellation or expiration. Financial Responsibility Insurance is required in Illinois for individuals with safety responsibility suspensions, unsatisfied judgment suspensions, revocations, mandatory insurance supervisions and individuals who receive three or more convictions for mandatory insurance violations.
To obtain an SR-22, you must contact an insurance company authorized to write SR-22 policies for Illinois. The issuing agency also must have a power of attorney on file in Illinois. The SR-22 must be submitted on a Financial Responsibility Certificate from the home office of the insurance company. The SR-22 certificate is issued in one of the following forms:
- Operator’s Certificate — covers the motorist in the operation of any non-owned vehicle.
- Owner’s Certificate — covers vehicles owned by the driver. The type of vehicle must be listed on the SR-22 or may be issued for all owned vehicles.
- Operators-Owners Certificate — covers all vehicles owned or non-owned by the driver.
When payment is made to an insurance agency, the agent will submit a request for an SR-22 certificate to the central office. The SR-22 certificate is sent directly to the Secretary of State’s office and may take up to 30 days for processing. The individual will receive a copy of the SR-22 from the insurance company and a letter from the Secretary of State’s office. The insurance must be maintained for three years. If the SR-22 expires or is cancelled, the insurance company is required by law to notify the Safety and Financial Responsibility Section by a SR-26 Cancellation Certificate. Upon receipt, the driving record will be suspended. This suspension cannot be removed until the insurance filing has been reinstated.
SR-22 insurance must be renewed a minimum of 45 days in advance to avoid future insurance-related suspensions. If the insurance agency does not receive a renewal 15 days before the insurance expiration, they are required by law to notify the Secretary of State’s office.
As an alternative to SR-22 insurance, an individual may deposit $55,000 in cash or securities with the Illinois State Treasurer, file a surety bond, or file a real estate bond approved by a court of record. Out-of-state residents may request their proof of financial responsibility for Illinois be waived by completing an Affidavit. The affidavit applies only to Illinois’ insurance requirements. In the event you move back to Illinois within three years from acceptance of the insurance waiver, your SR-22 requirement for Illinois would be reinstated.

Karen Went Above and Beyond the Call of Duty
Good afternoon,
My name is Todd and I just wanted to write you to tell you about my positive customer experience with your organization, and with Karen Sills specifically. I first contacted Serenity around Veteran’s Day and Karen happened to receive my call. I am just now getting my license back after several previous indiscretions and I was trying to understand the insurance possibilities for my situation. I was interested in buying a luxury vehicle, but I didn’t want to commit to that if insurance would not be available or would be too costly. Karen took my information and assured me that I should be able to find coverage. Karen seemed pleasant so I asked if I could ask for her directly when I actually purchased a vehicle.
I believe I called Karen once or twice more with various questions and each time Karen was more than willing to help. Finally a week from this past Tuesday I find myself at the BMW dealership and the salesman wouldn’t move forward with the paperwork until I provided him with proof of insurance. I had saved Karen’s number in my phone for just this situation and gave her a call. Karen was able to located decent coverage but offered to do a little more research to see if she could do better since she knew my sales deal would take a while. When she called back not only had she saved me money but she stated that the coverage was also much better.
I realize I am getting a little long winded here, but I wanted you to know how much I appreciated Karen’s efforts in helping me through this process. I feel that she did her job extremely well, and probably went above and beyond the call of duty as well. In my opinion, you have a valuable asset in Karen and I wanted to share my experience.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Have a great afternoon!
Regards,
Todd in FL

Study Shows Teens “Inherit” Poor Driving Habits From Parents
According to a new study from Liberty Mutual Insurance and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), teens that engage in dangerous driving are not picking up poor habits on their own, but instead have observed their parents engage in them while riding as passengers. Out of more than 1,700 teens surveyed across the country, the vast majority pointed out a number of poor and dangerous driving habits exhibited by their parents.
The survey's results revealed that 91% of teens observed their parents talking on cell phones while driving, 88% observed their parents speeding, and 59% of parents were guilty of texting while driving. And beyond speeding and hot-topic driving hazards like cell phone use, almost half of the teens surveyed reported that they had witnessed their parents drive at least occasionally without a seatbelt. Even more disturbing was that 20% teens said they have observed their parents driving while under the influence of alcohol, while 7% have observed their parents drive under the influence of marijuana. The findings were disturbing, as teens practically mirrored their parents behavior in most categories.
Among the same 1,700 teens surveyed, 90% admitted to talking on their cell phones while driving, 94% admitted to speeding occasionally (while 47% said they speed often to very often), and nearly 80% admitted to sending text messages while driving. When it came to seatbelt use, 33% confessed that they have driven without a seatbelt. As far as driving under the influence, 15% of teens surveyed had driven under the influence of alcohol, while 16% had driven after using marijuana. For Liberty Mutual and SADD, the results provide a clear link between observed and self-reported driving behaviors.
Beyond a number of poor driving influences that teens admitted to witnessing from parents, 66% of teen drivers said that they are often instructed to "do as I say, not as I do" by their own parents when it comes to driving habits. According to Stephen Wallace, a senior advisor for policy research and education at SADD, this type of instruction from parents actually undermines the rules of the road they set for their teens. Wallace believes that the best instruction that a teen can receive when it comes to driving safely is for parents to set the example and become a good role model behind the wheel. Additionally, Wallace advises that parents should create an open dialogue about safe driving behavior with their teens, and also create and sing a parent/teen contract outlining in detail the types of positive driving habits both parties will adhere to when on the road.
Parent/teen contracts can be found on the Liberty Mutual website, or in most cases, on the website of your personal insurance provider.
