Your biggest wastes of money

Buying flashy cars and not planning for the future are just a couple of mistakes people make with their finances.

Unfortunately, there is quite a gap between what people would like to do with their money and what they actually do. For many, buying a house, taking trips with family or even retiring may present difficulties if drastic changes aren’t made in spending and saving habits.

Financial planning is vital for attaining realistic goals. Investing for the future should be a regular habit.

Here are some common financial mistakes that people make.

Not paying bills on time

Many people look at credit cards as a means to improve their lifestyle. So the end of the month rolls around and you receive that dreaded envelope in the post from your credit card company.

If you've ever paid a bill late, you will have probably noticed that you're charged a fine.

Brushing aside your bill or ignoring it all together could be detrimental to your credit rating and cost you more through the interest payments.

Trying to make an impression

Just because your neighbour has a flashy new TV, doesn’t mean you need to get one.

Buying for status is perhaps one of the worst financial mistakes. There is no evidence to prove that impressing others with a fancy car can make you happier. In fact, the debt you take on while acquiring these assets could prove to be costly. Never think about what others have as there are financial consequences of buying more than you need.

Overusing credit cards

Time and time again cards are used to purchase the smallest of things – from a loaf of bread to a packet of crisps.

The cost of the items you have charged becomes the purchase price plus interest. Before you know it, you’ll have filled the car up with petrol, bought a new duvet cover and have acquired the entire Monty Python DVD box set. Next time you make impulsive purchases, ask yourself if what you are buying is worth the interest.

Not planning for the future

Taking control of your spending and managing your money can help pave the way to achieving financial goals.

Failure to plan ahead can be a result of inexperience or may even be attributed to ignorance and fear. Although you may not want to face the future, it is just around the corner and without significant planning, you will find life much more difficult.

Lack of life insurance and health insurance could leave you in a difficult situation if problems were to arise. After all, life insurance is an asset for an individual.

Acting as a guarantor

Those of you with good credit may sometimes be tempted to guarantee a tenancy agreement or mortgage for a friend or family member with a history of financial problems.

But be prepared for what this implies. When you guarantee a mortgage or tenancy agreement, you’re taking on a risk that a professional lender or letting agent won’t take. If they can’t repay the debt, then you will be responsible for it. You may be better off staying away from playing the sugar daddy or a good Samaritan and keep your financial records on track.

Not Tesco's finest hour when it turned down insurance renewal

I claimed for storm damage on my Tesco Finest home insurance policy – but 18 months later it refused to quote for a renewal

I have a Tesco Finest home insurance policy. In January 2012 a huge ash tree in a neighbour's garden came down in strong winds, demolishing my shed, a low wall round a patio and stone garden furniture. Tesco eventually settled my claim and in May 2012 it renewed the insurance.

However, this year I was told that I did not meet its underwriting criteria. When I queried this, I was told it was because the claim came to just over £10,000. This seems ludicrous as the whole reason for insurance is to be prepared for the worst.

I have spoken to the Association of British Insurers and it says it is a commercial decision. Citizens Advice also says Tesco is entitled to refuse to quote. My problem is that when I try to get a quote I am asked whether I have ever been refused insurance and I fear that answering yes will affect my eligibility. CC, Sunbury-on-Thames, Middlesex

Few sectors punish customers as severely as insurance companies do for requesting the service that they have paid for. Usually, they do this by hiking premiums should you make a claim and Tesco's sudden rejection of you, over a year after the payout, seems inexplicable. Tesco, having stymied all your attempts to resolve the situation, is equally baffled when I query its logic and it decides to blame human error. "We have contacted Ms Cooper to apologise, as having reviewed her case we realise that we should have offered her the option to renew her policy," says a spokeswoman. You now rejoice in a new policy; good luck when you next have to claim on it.

Do You Want To Pay Cheaper Premium On Your Van Insurance Policy?

Investing in vans or similar vehicles has resulted in many businesses doubling or even tripling their profits because of the role these vehicles play. A current and valid insurance policy is a must have for all vehicles including vans irrespective of their shape, sizes and purpose of use.

Getting the right insurance coverage for a van can become extremely expensive for businesses, especially those requiring fleet insurance for their numerous vans. Finding an inexpensive van insurance premium can most times become a daunting task if you do not know how and where to find it- below are great tips you can adopt when searching for low- cost van insurance premium for your business.

Irrespective of your situation, searching for a new van insurance policy for your new van or perhaps, wanting to renew your existing policy, doing a little research can save you time and money on the long run. In this day and age, the way we search for information has been greatly influenced by the advent of the internet, and so provide the best place to begin your search for the least expensive van insurance quotes.

The Internet is a Good Starting Point For Your Van Insurance Research

Going through scores of different van insurance quotes manually is the perfect way to waste your time and money. Over the last decade comparison websites have sprung up to help you compare insurance quotes fast and saving you money on your premiums, use them!. All you need to do: fill out a simple form with your correct details on the comparison website then get lots of quotes from different insurers within seconds.

Although not all offer that;s guaranteed to meet your particular budget expectation, you will discover that some insurers are in a much better position to offer your desired level of cover at an incredibly reduced premium. After picking your ideal quote, it pays to always consult the insurer to confirm a detail or two about your chosen policy before committing to the insurance quote on offer.

While the internet is an ideal starting point for uncovering that elusive low cost van insurance premium, you also need to be prepared to contact your insurer to see what deal is available. It’s an ideal opportunity for you to determine what is contained within the policy you’re buying and what is not in it. Upon providing your new or amended details to the insurer after the initial quote, they may now use the new information to revise their previous quote which could even become cheaper still.- http://www.cheapestvaninsurance.org/

Call Up Your New Insurers To Discuss The Policy

Insurance for van is a little more of a specialist type of cover than car or even home insurance. Unfortunately, not all insurers can provide cover, in particular competitive premiums. Many a times, we avoid trying newer things instead, we stick with what we’ve been accustomed to, like getting quotes from the same insurer we’ve been with for ages . However, if you’re serious about reducing your premium you must to go the extra mile.

No matter how contented you may be with your current premium or insurer, it still pays to shop around to get even better bargain. Irrespective of the manner you search for a cheaper deal, using van insurance comparison sites or approaching individual insurers directly or through their websites, discovering discount quotes can be pretty straight forward.

If you are able to source a cheaper quote you can use that information to approach your current insurers (or indeed any others that you’re interested in) and discuss their competitor’s sites. These insurers are under no pressure to change their quotation, some might not even consider changing it, it simply establishes a medium of at least communication with the added chance of reducing your premium even further without amending your policy.

Confirming Your Policy

At this critical stage before your policy acceptance, you will be in a better position to figure out what’s best to retain or discard with your policy in order to keep your premium at a low. Typically, insurers would like to cross sell you on other insurance packages like legal expenses cover, personal injury cover, European cover and lots more. But, there isn’t any point buying any of these package when you really do not need them.

A policy thoroughly examined to strip of any unwanted extras and left with only the primary cover and protection needed. Don’t go increasing your level of excess by an insane amount, just make sure you aren’t paying for unwanted add- on. Getting rid of all the unwanted optional extras from your policy will help you save loads.

The bottom line though is when it comes to reducing van insurance premium you’ll need to be prepared to do some work. Whether that’s researching alternative providers online or phoning your current insurer to see if they can remove any unnecessary baggage, there are plenty of options to help you get the right result.

California Only State Where Auto Insurance Has Dropped In 25 Years

By Aaron Crowe

A 1989 California law that requires insurers to get approval from state officials for rate hikes has resulted in California being the only state to see rates drop during that time.

Between 1989 and 2010, while every other state saw substantial increases in auto insurance expenditures, California drivers saw their insurance costs drop 0.3% without adjusting for inflation, according to an analysis by the Consumer Federation of America.

Nationally, Americans spent $791 for auto insurance coverage in 2010, or $240 — 43% — more than they did in 1989, according to the CFA analysis of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Californians spent an average of $746 for the same coverage in 2010, or $2 more, than in 1989.

During that time, 37 states saw larger increases than the national average. Eight states and the District of Columbia saw increases smaller than the national average, but still saw increases of more than 25%. Four states had increases of less than 20%.

California’s drop is attributed to the state’s strong oversight of the insurance industry created by passage of Proposition 103 in 1988, when California’s insurance rates were the third highest in the nation and 36% higher than the national average.

“No other state has put in place the kind of strong oversight that California voters created in 1988, and no other state has seen auto insurance prices decline,” says J. Robert Hunter, insurance director for CFA, in a statement. “In California, as a result, Proposition 103 drivers are paying less for car insurance today than they were 25 years ago.

The law created a “prior approval” system of regulation for most lines of insurance in California. Insurance companies must present any rate change plan to the Department of Insurance and can’t raise rates or make other changes without authorization from the state Insurance Commissioner.

Insurance company data and proposals are made entirely public, allowing for much more scrutiny than other states, according to the CFA.

Another benefit of the law is that consumers and consumer groups can request a hearing at the Department of Insurance on improper insurance company rates or practices, and they’re automatically granted a public hearing for large increases.

“California’s version of prior approval regulation includes additional protections that have made the state’s insurance system much more effective than any other states’ systems,” Hunter says.

Now, more than 20 years later, California’s auto insurance rates are lower than 20 states, and 6% lower than the national average.

The four states with less than a 25% increase in auto insurance expenditures from 1989 to 2010 are: Hawaii at 13.7% more, New Hampshire at 15.9%, New Jersey at 17.7%, and Massachusetts at 22.3%.

The top five states with the highest percentage change during that time were: Nebraska at 108.1%, Louisiana at 96.1%, Montana at 95.4%, Wyoming at 95.1%, and Kentucky at 92.3%.

Below is a chart provided by CFA on percentage change in auto insurance expenditures from 1989 to 2010.

Understanding commercial van insurance?

If you use your van just for business reasons instead of social and domestic pleasure then commercial van insurance policies are an essential purchase for your business. The goal of commercial van insurance cannot be overemphasised. Nevertheless, it is intended to protect against any kind of scenarios in the near future; for instance, in the risk that your van becomes stolen- the van insurance provider is more than prone to compensate the depreciated value of your van.

http://www.cheapestvaninsurance.org/pay-as-you-go-van-insurance-monthly-van-insurance-1-month-van-insurance.html

Considerably reducing your expenses to a minimum is a possible means for running a easier enterprise, this also consists of shopping around to find the best quality van insurance policy for your business vans that won't set you back an arm and a leg. Purchasing the lowest cost insurance would undoubtedly save you loads of cash at first. However, your business could still pass up substantially in the event the right coverage isn't choosen, so be meticulous when analyzing your van insurance demands prior to staying in a particlular cover.

The sorts of insurance policies that you can secure is often dependant on several requirements, factors like level you would like to be protected by, the make and model of the van, or possibly vehicles that you own and the term of the protection.

A number of insurance providers gives insurance coverage to private firms, sole traders and big business owners as these protects ranges from diverse levels. The three or more principal styles of covers that you may obtain for your van comprise of fully comprehensive, third party fire and theft and third party commercial.

The most costly as well as most complicated sort of insurance coverage is the fully comprehensive cover mainly because it has a tendency to safeguard every type of accidents as well as accidental injuries that may take place. The comprehensive insurance policy is a cover that protects against damages to the belongings of parties involved in an automobile accident, protects against accidental deaths resulting from a vehicle accident and finally, covers from injuries sustained due to any sort of accident.

Comprehensive van insurance also covers against any kind of harm to both you and the 3rd party's vehicle after a major accident, covers against theft, burglary, vandalism as well as entitles you to courtesy vehicle when your van is off the road for repairs. If you store equipment in your van subsequently it is really worthwhile confirming that these can also be protected through your comprehensive insurance protection.

In addition to the comprehensive policy, third party fire and theft tackles the security of destruction, losses and also liabilities resulting from third parties which includes fire, theft, burglary, vandalism as well as collisions as well. It is prudent to remember that this sort of insurance policy protection will likely not protect you and your vehicle if the third party does not have his/her own insurance in the course of the car accident.

Third party commercial van insurance policy is usually the lowest priced, and most significant form of van insurance policy not to mention protects you from any kind of damages to a third party. Due to the fact third party insurance coverage usually do not safeguard against your company's car, you'll be responsible for repairing the car belonging to the 3rd party if it's established that you were responsible for the accident.

An old banged up van that cost next to nothing could be used for your business to avoid high cost of insurance policies. By taking out a third party policy only, you could fulfil your legal obligation of being legal on the road whilst saving loads of your insurance premium monthly.

No matter how much you use your van, you can also customize it with additional add ons on offer by business van insurance firms. Add ons like ability to drive other vans, being able to drive in other countries whilst being covered, being protected up to your legal expenses all come very handy in the course of your business operations.

One of the best approach of obtaining cheap van insurance (http://www.cheapestvaninsurance.org/) is by doing a  van insurance comparison on quotes proposed by insurance firms. Also corporate organisations get incredible bargains on their commercial van insurance therefore keeping part of their outgoings to a minimum.

Tips On How To Limit The Losses On Your Van With A Van Insurance Cover

The main essence of a vehicle insurance policies are to protect against any kind of unforeseen disasters or incidents such as theft, accidents or fire. As a result, if perhaps your motor vehicle gets involved in an accident and gets damaged, your van policy protects it and it’s going to be repaired back to it’s original state. Realistically, car insurance policy is a massive relief for both vans and other automobile owners. Some individuals have this perception that van insurance is pretty expensive and therefore get frightened insuring their vehicles therefore breaking the law. Presently, getting cheap van insurance deal can be extremely very easy if you follow a few guidelines. – http://www.cheapestvaninsurance.org/

A few of the criteria needed for securing a cheap van insurance are: ensuring that you have not claimed from your previous policy for up to 5 years or more; making sure that your van is always packed in a secured garage at night. It is a common belief that only commercial vans needs to be insured but this is not the case rather non-commercial van insurance is important for everyone who drives a van whether for commercial purpose or non commercial purpose.

Extra insurance coverage could be needed for those that use their vans consistently on a daily basis. For individuals and small corporations, vehicles are one of the easiest choice for the moving of products as well as services. Vans have become very depended upon by people and corporations nowadays. In the event that these vans get damaged, then it adversely affects the whole business entirely as movement of goods and services are restricted. In such an ideal situation, that’s where van insurance policy comes in, they would reimburse expenses and losses derived as a result of the damages in addition to getting the vehicle back on the road.

So that the policy holder can be rest assured of not suffering further financial consequences. Before obtaining your van insurance quotes online, always ensure you determine the appropriate cover that meets your requirements and suitability. Whether comprehensive, third party fire and theft or just third party only, paying for a cover you don’t really need would end up costing you more money. Basically, if your premium is less than 10 times your six months comprehensive insurance then you might not need to take out the policy because your van might not be worth taking out the comprehensive cover on.

Some individuals feel they can select a different cover in order to have a cheaper premium but use their vans for a purpose contrary to the purpose they have stated with their insurers, These is very unwise as such acts can invalidate one’s policy. Van insurance brings with it considerable amount of benefits and rest of mind as well against any future eventualities. To help business owners and sole proprietors carry on with their businesses when their vehicle is off road due to an accident, most insurance companies always provide courtesy vehicles for their policy holders.

Business owners most especially benefit from this huge benefit especially those that cannot do without their vans on a daily basis. The insurance of vans includes two major covers that includes comprehensive cover and third party fire and theft. Collision or third party fire and theft entails cover for third party vehicles that are involved with yours in an accident and also covers your vehicles against fire and theft. This coverage is offered mainly for collision with other third party vehicles in an event of any collision whatsoever.

However, in the event of any natural disasters like flood, hail, thunder storms earth quakes and so on then comprehensive cover is the most ideal policy to undertake for your vehicle. A lot of superb advice exists that can help lower the amount of insurance premium billed by insurance firms.

Below are a number of ways to obtain a cheap van insurance-

(I) if you are a good driver, then you can increase your deductible amount and also avoiding any claims in order to lower down your premium.

(II) Installing car alarms and immobilisers do prevent car theft and burglary to a certain extent that the insurance companies are willing to credit you for installing them on your vehicle. Security systems are very effective for deterring break ins and theft and insurance companies give discounts by reducing premiums on vehicles that have installed security systems.

(III) Another great way of acquiring cheap van insurance is by just doing your research other van insurance websites to obtain the cheapest quotes for your needs. Comparing various insurance quotes would help you unveil numerous quotes you never knew existed before.

The Hartford/MIT Determine Which Driver Aids Are Best for Older Drivers

While today's cars can come equipped with a number of driving aids ranging from "simple" sonar sensors to help judge distances from obstacles, to those that actually park your car for you, for the most part, few have been able to put a quantifiable amount to how well they work. On top of that, most of the features have only been equipped on high-end luxury cars until the past couple of years. To compound the issue, this put many high-tech features out of reach for younger buyers, only allowing mostly older drivers to afford them.

Now, enter The Hartford and the MIT AgeLab. The financial services giant, partnering with the MIT group specifically charged with conducting research to improve the quality of life for older adults, were able to determine that drivers over the age of 50 are more likely than any other age group to buy vehicles containing those modern technologies. With that figure in mind, the two conducted a study into what technologies help advance these type of driver's abilities the most. When the results were compiled, the two listed their top 10 most effective features, which goes as follows:

  1. Smart Headlights
Researchers found that headlights capable of adjusting the range and intensity of the headlamps not only reduce glare and improve night vision, but also spread light where normal headlamps can't when making turns.
  2. Emergency Response Systems
Systems including and similar to GM's OnStar offer quick assistance to drivers at the push of a button. This allows a quick response in the event of a medical emergency, or if a driver simply needs directions. In addition, these systems can also alert operators in the event of a collision, which can save precious seconds when it comes to getting first responders to the scene.
  3. Reverse Monitoring Systems
By using rear-view cameras and sonar sensors, these aids not only provide a wide angle view of what is behind the driver's car, but can also help drivers judge distances from obstacles and back up safely. Plus, the ability to see objects behind the vehicle through a monitor in the dashboard lets drivers face forward, providing a huge safety advantage for those with reduced flexibility.
  4. Blind Spot Warning Systems
This helpful system warns drivers of objects lingering in blind spots, and can also be a helpful tool for those with a limited range of motion. Drivers receive an audible and visual alert should they be at risk of a potential collision while changing lanes or parking.
  5. Lane Departure Warning
These systems take blind spot warning a step further by monitoring the vehicle's position on the road, not only providing a warning if the driver drifts out of their intended lane, but by also adjusting the vehicle's direction slightly to help keep the car where it belongs.
  6. Vehicle Stability Control
Relying on multiple sensors that detect engine speed, throttle position, wheel speed, braking force, and vehicle yaw, these systems help automatically bring your vehicle back into its intended line of travel. They are particularly effective in situations where the driver underestimates the angle of a curve or experiences a momentary loss of control during poor weather.
  7. Assistive Parking Systems
While this technology seemed next to impossible a few years ago, a number of vehicles today come equipped with systems that allow a car to park entirely by itself. This not only increases the number of places an elderly driver can park, but can also reduce driver stress as well.
  8. Voice Activated Systems
These helpful systems allow drivers to access and control just about any feature available through the car's infotainment system. Depending on the car, this can include air conditioning, phone calls, music selections, and stereo volume. This allows drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road where they belong.
  9. Crash Mitigation Systems
Also referred to as collision avoidance systems, these aids can detect when the vehicle is in danger of collision. If the system detects an impending collision, it can help minimize the impact by applying the brakes at maximum force – usually before the driver has time to react. By slowing the car, it can help reduce the likelihood of injury in a crash.
  10. Drowsy Driver AlertsThese systems monitor the degree to which a driver may or may not be paying attention. If the system detects the driver isn't at attention, it will provide feedback drivers can hear, and sometimes feel, to help them stay alert while on the road.

Road Rage, Distracted Driving Common Among Daily Commuters

A surprising poll recently conducted by Harris Interactive for the job-posting and career advice website CareerBuilder.com provided some interesting insight into American drivers and their habits behind the wheel. Not so surprisingly, the results showed that as a whole, drivers in the U.S. are an angry and distracted bunch.

The poll, conducted between May 14 and June 4 of this year, surveyed almost 3,900 motorists about their commutes to and from work. Of those polled, the vast majority (83%) drove to work each day as opposed to using public transportation. The poll excluded those who were self-employed or employed in government jobs.

According to Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder.com, road rage is most associated with running late and dealing with long, far commutes. In total, 58% of all drivers said they experienced road rage during their commutes to and from work. This doesn't mean drivers with short commutes were immune to road rage, though, just that they were less likely to experience it. In fact, only 37% of drivers with a commute of five minutes or less experienced road rage, while 54% of those with commutes of 10 minutes or less admitted to experiencing road rage.

As surprising as it may seem, 61% of all women surveyed admitted that they experienced road rage at some point while making their daily commute, while only 56% of men admitted to losing their head behind the wheel. Regardless of gender, younger drivers are more prone to road rage than older ones, adhering to the stereotype that the older you get, the more you mellow-out. Approximately 68% of those surveyed between the ages of 25 and 34 years old said they experience road rage, while only 47% of those 55 and above admitted the same.

The weather also factored into a driver's likelihood of experiencing road rage. Nearly 17% of those surveyed said that when the temperatures go up in the summer, they experience road rage less. Only 10% claimed that the added heat of the summer months fueled their fury behind the wheel.

While a significant amount of Americans seem to struggle with anger issues during their commutes, the upside came from the fact that only 9% had actually been involved in to a fight with another driver.

Beyond angry driving, almost one in four commuters (24%) has been in an accident while on their way to work, while just under a third (30%) admitted to texting and driving while on their way to work. All in all, to keep your vehicle out of harm's way, keep calm and focus on driving while commuting — and watch out for those who don't.

Everything You Need to Know About Excluding People From Auto Insurance

Extremely toxic drivers, such as those convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, may make an exclusion a necessity.

As one’s household grows, so too, does their auto insurance policy. While this is a pretty standard and expected occurrence, it’s important for people with an increasing number of licensed drivers under one roof to realize they have options. Should any of their family members threaten their driving reputation and quotes, policyholders have the option to remove and exclude them from their insurance plans, making auto coverage someone else’s problem and responsibility.

Requesting an Exclusion

If you’re a policyholder interested in excluding one or more individuals from your policy, then you need to contact your insurance company and/or agent. Your request will have to be in writing and might also come with additional forms and paperwork, depending on who your insurance company is. It’s also important to note that requesting an exclusion may cause your rates to increase a bit, but some view this cost as a much more affordable expense than the potential damages they might be held accountable for when the dangerous driver(s) in question get in a serious accident or have repeated traffic offenses.

Whom Should I Exclude?

Now that you know how to request an exclusion, it’s important to understand WHO to exclude. You should exclude anyone you see as high-risk, unreliable and irresponsible. Individuals who show no regard for rules and regulations and could care less what happens to your name and record in the process are other obvious options. To help make the choice easier for you, below is a list of three individuals you definitely don’t want on your policy.

Mittens, the Family Cat

While a fluffy, cute member of the family, Mittens also has a wild side with which you are all too familiar. She is open about her late-night romps with her neighborhood friends, often coming home as the sun rises. She’s practically nocturnal! Those crazy hours coupled with her sassy attitude are a recipe for disaster for you and your record, so nip this problem in the bud while you still can — before Mittens brings you down with her.

Your Six-year-old Who’s Going on Sixteen

Six-year-old Ben is your pride and joy. He’s cute and sweet, but let’s be honest — the boy is growing up too fast. Rather than run the risk of him growing up, stealing your car and running away, it’s probably best to exclude him from your policy to keep that from happening. You might not be able to stop him from physically growing, but you will darn sure try to stop him from leaving you!

The Neighbor Next Door Who Thinks He’s ALWAYS Welcome

Sure you let him borrow a cup a sugar once, but does that really warrant unannounced pop-ins or the dreaded ‘surprise I was waiting for you to get home from work’ visit? The answer is obviously no, but that doesn’t stop your too-close-for-comfort neighbor from doing just that and more. A sweet, eager individual with no concept of social norms, this neighbor is here so often you’re worried he thinks he’s actually a part of the family. While you technically shouldn’t have to cover him on your insurance, the lines that surround your whole relationship — and evidently your property— have been blurred. So, just to be on the safe side, you better exclude him. Who knows, maybe one day he’ll get really comfortable and decide to take your car for a spin and get locked up for grand theft auto — maybe then at least you’ll get to cook in peace again!

Reality Check

Obviously, these examples of potential exclusions are extreme and ridiculous, but that’s just the point. Auto insurance exclusions are a serious issue that should be treated as such. They shouldn’t be added to policies willy-nilly and on a whim, but rather after serious thought and consideration has been given to the situation. It can be a pricey and potentially lengthy process that should only be implemented after you have determined there is no other feasible option.

You should only opt to exclude drivers with repeated violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding or any other behavior that shows a disregard for the law. It’s also important to note that exclusions can also apply to non-related roommates. Depending on your policy and location, it might be a smart idea to exclude any irresponsible roommates you might have, should they try to drive your vehicle without permission and thus endanger your reputation and record.

We do hope you’re never presented with having to exclude a family member from your auto policy. Keep in mind, it’s only advisable when the said-driver is extremely toxic. Most of the time, excluding a single driver will only lead to higher rates for everyone involved.

You’ll know they are a real risk if they cause you to be subjected to higher rates, or worse, put you in danger of losing your coverage altogether — those are costly expenses worth the fees that come along with an exclusion.

If you are seriously considering opting for an exclusion, talk with your insurer to explore all of your options and alternatives. They should help point you in the right direction for your future.
